"O God, whom saints and angels delight to worship in heaven: Be ever present with your servants who seek through art and music to perfect the praises offered by your people on earth; grant to them even now glimpses of your beauty, and make them worthy at length to behold it unveiled for evermore; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen"
Instrumental Music For The Liturgy
The instrumental music for this week is both powerful and significant. I first played "Vigil" by Eugene Butler in the early 1980's. His anthems and organ works contain a unique sound and progression of chords and melody - you just know when it is Eugene Butler. The opening haunting solo melody truly captivates the ear and is followed by parallel fourths and fifths. There is great spiritual power in these parallel chords. The French organist, Louis Vierne possessed a similar gift of understanding how these chords affect the human psyche. I have waited many years to be able to perform this piece as it is intended. It is extremely right brain music with breathtaking and mystical aspects. As we reflect upon baptism and spirit - may we become immersed in this lovely and beautiful music
The offertory, "Solitude III", is a similar original composition that I composed based upon a prayer from the Jewish Book of Prayer. The chordal progressions highlight this absolutely stunning text. This composition was inspired by and is dedicated to someone who is more beloved to me than words can ever tell.
And finally we will close with an original "Organ Improvisation". I have held back in my usual need to improvise during the Christmas and Advent season, because there is so much beautiful musical literature Russ and want to present. |
