Kimberly Haynes contacted me and sent me a poem that I loved. We met at a teen writing workshop in Brooklyn, NY. She attends Brooklyn Tech, a gifted high school. She's also a member of the Lady Dragons, a hot step team at the school. This poem was written at the workshop in about 15 minutes. That's what happens when you follow-up, you may have your work featured in Double Dutch. Here it is. . .
From the Stuy
by Kimberly Haynes
She's from the Stuy.
She can't possibly be smart.
All they have is baby-mommas and drive-bys, gangbangers and drug dealers.
She'll never make it out.
She's from the Stuy.
But yet she goes to Brooklyn Tech?
That must've been a mistake.
I bet she'll drop out.
She's from the Stuy.
I bet she's strung out on drugs,
Living on welfare,
And partying in project hallways.
She'll never make it out.
But this caged bird is singing,
And her wings are not broken.
She won't only fly. She will soar.
She chirps her song fearlessly,
Because she won't always be here.
God has more in store for her.
It's just a matter of time
Before her wings spread out.
