Teen Poetry Slam!
| On Friday, April 23, 2010 Powerhouse Media Group held
its 1st Teen Poetry Slam at the Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA in Brooklyn, NY.
Poet and host, Brittany "Blue" Bellinger, kept the audience excited to hear the poets. The judges included Brian Favors, The Sankofa Community Empowerment, Inc; Asoul Born, spoken word artist; Spencer Dargan, creative consultant for the couture fashion company, Lolli Popitt; and Jen Threat, Double Dutch Magazine.
The judges scored three rounds of competition for 13 poets. The scoring was based on originality, delivery and creativity. It was a tough decision. There were so many talented poets; no "Roses are Red" type poetry here. Poems topics ranged from love and forgiveness to manhood and street life. During scoring, Brooklyn hip-hop artist, Young Sho and DJ Chocolatte entertained the crowd.
Some unique names of poets were Beauty Spit Queen and Lost Child, but many used their government names. The delivery of some poets were in a speaking tone, high intensity or hip-hop rhymes. The first place winner and super hero of the night was Captain O.D. Here's a taste of a poem he presented about pursuing your dream by any means, "My last name is George and yes, I'm curious. I promise to put my heart in this." The ladies represented in second and third place. Maleeka Aisha won 2nd place and Danielle was third. All winners received cash prizes.
The event was presented by Feona Huff, president, Powerhouse Media Group and Domonic Smith, teen director, Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA.
