WORKING HARDER?

Greetings!

Have you noticed people are working harder and harder? Is this trend about to reach a fever pitch?

I've never worked harder to keep up. Nowadays, with email, mobile phones and messaging, and social media, it's harder to keep up than ever before.

All-consuming effort has a way of throwing people of great will out of whack, and crowd out the space needed to rest, reflect, and regain balance.

This got me to thinking about one of the keys to fun at work. Years ago I wrote about
The Challenge Your Thinking Key.

Examine first where you want to go and then choose the best way to get there.

Okay--but, is the best way really the all-consuming, crowd-out-everything-else way?

Is this happening with you?  Are you too busy to celebrate your work? If so, this a clue.

Thinking about this, I traveled back to the keys which were developed to deepen each of the principles of fun at work.

Challenge your thinking; choose the best way to get there
came to the front! I know what I'm doing--yet, is it the best way? Does the best way have to be the most stressful, most pressurized way too?

It seems to me a cue for remembering to challenge your thinking comes up when the proven and familiar approach shifts out of 'flow' into anything stress-inducing.
We change our experience through reflection, and, by generating options for changing how we experience the external conditions. Yes, in this era of the super slow economic recovery, job insecurity, lots of challenges outside the workplace, and our seeming around-the-clock availability, the motivation to re-double our efforts can be very strong.

Can we challenge our thinking enough to find our way to a path that isn't completely filled with pressure, stress, and, robbed of much of the enjoyment that was once the key to taking pleasure--and fun--in our work life?

Interaction at EAPM

Interacting with conference participant at EAPM-2012, the main yearly human resource confab for Europe. I was  honored to be the keynote speaker this year, at their conference in Istanbul, Turkey. I was not surprised to learn our European counterparts are eager to understand and learn more about the power of fun at work.

On the track of fun
