What
have you done for yourself lately?

Greetings!
The
summer of 2011 has been either a complete orgy in self indulgence or a wise
attempt at achieving life balance and renewal.
Having
survived cancer in the spring, my new mantra is to live today fully. Before my diagnosis I thought I believed
this, but now I understand it wholeheartedly.
My
perspective on myself is much clearer. Thus, I have launched into a frenzy of:
completing projects, engaging in relationships, traveling to beloved places,
maxing out on vacation time, and, making lots of time for learning. I refused no opportunity.
Carpe
Diem has never had more power or potency.
This
week I have gifted myself a workshop at The Cape Cod Institute, with Meg
Wheatley as the guide. After 2 hours of
thoughtful exercises and reflection I know I'm in the right place at the right
time for the right reasons.
In the
past I have denied myself these kinds of gifts and assumed I either did not
have the time or shouldn't spend the money. Now I ask myself, 'Does time dedicated to developing and caring for
one's self deny or defeat one's prosperity or goal attainment?'
"The first problem for all of us, men and women, is not to learn, but to unlearn." Gloria Steinem
After
this summer of self care I know the answer. No. After years of putting my
joy off for reasons of hard work and scarce resources, I now know taking care
of one's self - mentally, spiritually, physically and relationally - is the key
to health, happiness, prosperity and
success. Didn't I learn this years ago
with Stephen Covey; and, read it time and time again?
I
learned this summer that I have mastered hard work and focus. Now I'm learning
how to integrate all the other essential stuff into my well-developed Type A
approach to life.
"The mere sense of living is joy enough." Emily Dickinson
But, a
small voice in my head plays on old song of 'work hard and when you done and if
you're deserving...then you can have some fun.' With it sounding, I worry that I will squander years of hard work with this summer of joyful pursuits.
Gratefully
I am learning this voice is not the reality. In caring for myself, and recommitting to joy, I find myself newly
clear-headed, expansive, generous, and enthusiastic for my work and my
life.
Work hard and smell
the flowers! I wish it for you too. Let me know what you think. As always, feel free to pass along, opt in or
opt out of my newsletter. Have great days, Leslie Our loyal friends have their own page at changeisfun.com Follow Me nowhavingfun on Twitter. |

Ins &
Outs of Motivation and much more...
Leslie Yerkes has been teaching courses in the executive education
program at The Weatherhead School of Management's Dively Center for many years.
Her classes represent the intensive version of public speaking about the same
subjects. Several years ago she began teaching two section: Managing For
Motivation, and, Managing the Generations.
Leslie fits her experiential
learning approach to two broad frameworks about motivation. One is to bring in
her long-standing understanding about the whole person at work, the second is to
differentiate what some of the generational differences are with respect to
leading and motivating today's diverse, inter-generational workforce.
