Home and Community
NDSC Research and Survey Results Posted
Over the past few months, we have spent many hours on research, surveyed over 140 of our members and worked to determine the needs of our members and North Dakota citizens. From all of this, we learned that North Dakota is in need of programming to address the increase in unintentional injuries in our homes and communities. We have also learned that while off-the-job injuries are increasing throughout the country, very few of our members have programming to address this issue. Out of 146 of our members surveyed, only 13 of them have some sort of programming in place to address this increasing problem.
The NDSC is working to develop a program to help our members decrease off-the-job injuries. We have taken into consideration the research and our members input to develop a proposed plan for the new Home and Community program. We are looking for feedback on our plan, thoughts on programming and partners to support it, and members that would be interested in incorporating or improving an off-the-job safety program in their company.
Our members thoughts are very important to everyone here at the NDSC, and we would like to hear what you have to say about our proposed plan. Please visit the links below or visit our new Home and Community website to review our plan and research results.
Watch for the New Home and Community Survey!
As we stated above, your input is very important to us. To gather your thoughts on our proposed plan and ideas on programming, we have developed a second survey to be sent to those of you who volunteered to aid in the development of this program. The survey will be sent out shortly after this newsletter, so be watching!
If you did not receive the first survey but would like to offer your feedback, please contact Serena Schmit at 701-223-6372 or by email at serenas@ndsc.org.

Safe Kids ND
'09 Action Plan Set
Safe Kids North Dakota has completed their action planning for 2009. We have chosen to focus on two different unintentional injury topics: Pedestrian Safety and Motor Vehicle Safety.
We are currently in the process of developing a Pedestrian Safety Program to distribute throughout the state to elementary physical education teachers. This program will focus on safety around railroad tracks and crossings, crosswalks, attention to traffic signals and how to make safe choices around school buses.
To address motor vehicle safety, we are again engaging rural cities with our Community Package Project. This project allows us to reach out to rural areas and provide them with the tools and guidance they may need to become self-sufficient car seat check-up locations. Be watching for a car seat check-up in your area soon!
We are researching other ways to effectively address motor vehicle safety for children 0-14 years of age. Safe Kids Fargo-Moorhead has implemented a Take 5 program to encourage all drivers to "take 5" and walk around their vehicles to check for children or other objects that may be unseen from the mirrors of the vehicle. We will also be contacting other Safe Kids coalitions throughout the country to find new and innovative ways to address this unintentional injury topic.
