Dara Duff-Bergeron Greetings!

They're here...  The parties, the booze, the shopping, the late nights, the hors d'oeuvres, the travel, the hostessing... the weight gain...  As I brace myself for the busiest of seasons, I am inspired to share with you my most crucial weapon against the battle of the bulge: information.

Here it is: glorious, glorious information.  Use it for good, not evil.  Be reasonable and responsible with your body.  It is reasonable to have a glass of red wine.  It is reasonable to taste the cookies you baked for the girls at the office.  It is not reasonable to plow through an entire box of chocolates because holiday calories don't count.  They count.  You decide how much they count.  And when you've chosen your calories, enjoy them, never regret them and, above all, exercise regularly to counteract them.  Adding a few extra minutes to your usual workout or organizing a weekly outdoor activity for the family can make the difference between gloating or bloating at that office party.  Happy Holidays!  Be well.

5 ways to keep off holiday pounds
fit family top 5

shopping is not cardio, ladies
Just when your schedule is the busiest, you need those workouts the most.  The best strategy to avoid weight gain is to keep moving.  Here are five ways to squeeze in a few more minutes while keeping up with your to-do list.

  1. walk-n-shop.  Online shopping is tempting but can often be just as time consuming.  Park the car in the heart of downtown and enjoy the fresh air and bustling energy of the city's great shopping districts. A 150-lb person burns 160 calories in just one hour of shopping.
  2. try something new.  Try ballet or join your girlfriend for that boxing class she's been raving about.  Over time, the exercises we are familiar with don't cause us to burn as many calories.  Adding some variety can help you blast off more calories in the same time.
  3. rise and shine.  Chances are your parties are not scheduled for 6 a.m. so why not bump your workouts back and leave your after-work hours for socializing, shopping and wrapping?  Make a commitment to morning workouts until the holidays are over, then go back to your usual schedule - or don't!  You may just find out you're a morning person after all!
  4. get the family involved.  Your kids, parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents - they all want to spend more time with you over the holidays.  Invite them to a family hike, tobogganing party or an afternoon of ice skating.  They'll be excited to spend some quality time and you'll sneak in a workout.
  5. clean house.  Preparing your house for company can burn more calories than you might think.  Give your husband a break and shovel the driveway.  Put on some great music and sweep, mop, dust and tidy.  A 150-lb person burns around 200 calories for every hour of housework.

fact: dieters lose twice the weight - up to 20 pounds in 6 months - when they use a food journal to record everything they eat, compared to dieters who don't journal.
