Wells Street Art Fest is Here!

DEAR OLD TOWN NEIGHBOR, 
Here we are again, scratching our heads and wondering how Memorial Day weekend is already upon us.  Graduations, spring plantings, and. . . oh . . . festival season in Old Town!  There has been a lot of activity on the street lately and it's not just the festival.  Take a look at some of the the highlights from the last month.  Have a safe and happy Memorial Day Weekend and we'll see you at the Wells Street Art Fest!
 
Come to the Social, Stay for the Festival
By now you should have received your postcard inviting you to the Wells Street Art Fest Social on Friday, June 11th at the Carriage Lot (1556 N. Wells) from 5pm - 8pm.  All membership is welcome to join us ring in another festival season -- the the 36th Annual Wells Street Art Fest -- and the unofficial beginning of summer in Old Town.  Just give the office a call at 312-951-6106 to RSVP.  The social will be held on a carpeted parking lot landscaped with tropicals from Old Town Gardens, and catered by nine of your favorite Old Town restaurants.
Crews will be hard at work only a few short hours after the social to get the street ready for the festival.  The festival will be held on Wells Street from North Avenue to Division from 10am to 10pm on Saturday and Sunday June 12th and13th.  Click here

Night Out In Old Town
On May 18th the Old Town Merchants and Residents Association celebrated its 2nd "Night Out in Old Town" by enjoying a mainstage Second City production and following up with dessert and coffee (or wine) at Dinotto Ristorante.
These Night Out events are getting so popular, we've already got the next one planned.  Mark down Tuesday, July 20th on your calendar.  Old Town Social and Zanies are joining forces to offer a spectacular summer evening in Old Town.  This event is perfect for entertaining clients, rewarding staff, or just getting out in the neighborhood and re-connecting with your favorite Old Town businesses.

SMALL BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT FUND NEAR NORTH TIF DISTRICT ROLL OUT! 
The City of Chicago's Small Business Improvement Fund (SBIF) is a Tax Increment Financing (TIF) program which will reimburse building owners for TIF-eligible investments.  Projects must preserve building stock, improve neighborhood appearance or economic value, and enable businesses to stay in the neighborhood, remain competitive or even expand within the TIF.  The Near North TIF district includes but is not limited to  portions of Wells Street, North Avenue, and Division Street in the service area of the Old Town Merchants and Residents Association.
Grants are only available in the form of reimbursement.  Depending on business size and annual revenue, funding is available for 25% - 75% of SBIF-eligible costs.  There is a maximum assistance of $150,000 per project and per applicant.
Eligibility for this program is open to both property owners and lessees.  Commercial applicants will have a maximum of $3 million in annual sales for the past three years.  Industrial applicants have no sales requirements but may not employ more than 100 full-time employees.  Landlord applicants have a maximum net worth of $6 million and total liquidity of no more than $500,000. 
Eligible costs include:
*Roofing and façade repair, including restoration of historic buildings
*Signs or awnings permanently affixed to the building
*Alterations or structures needed for ADA compliance
*HVAC and other mechanical systems
*Certain beautification efforts located in the public way
*Environmental remediation measures
*Purchase of adjacent land parcels for purposes of expansion or parkiong
*Parking facility paving

Streetwise on Old Town -- info and opportunities to sponsor
On Wednesday, June 16th, StreetWise Magazine will feature Old Town in a Neighborhood Special Section.
Since 1992, StreetWise the organization has helped thousands of men and women become self-sufficient by providing the tools, and the encouragement to succeed.  Vendors buy the magazine wholesale (75 cents), and sell it retail ($2.00), just like any other business.  Both residents and visitors purchase StreetWise on a routine basis.

Redmoon Summer Camp at Franklin Fine Arts Center
Redmoon Theatre is bringing their art and theatre to Old Town.  Redmoon will inspire young imaginations in a unique exploration of Redmoon's creativity and collaboration. Youth will be introduced to Redmoon's exciting tool box of puppetry, mechanical object making, shadow, and physical performance. Summer Camp participants will create an original performance for family and friends on the final day of camp.
 
 Redmoon Summer Camp.  Don't miss out!  Redmoon was recently featured at the Chicago Children's Humanities Festival on the stage of the MCA.  This summer they will launch their first ever Summer Camp in the Old Town Neighborhood, a great opportunity for kids to engineer creativity.

Business Sign Amnesty Workshop

 The City of Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection will begin their Business Sign Amnesty Program as of Thursday, April 15, 2010. 
They will be holding a workshop providing details about the new policy and will cover the new Public Way program. 
 
Any business that has a sign on their premise is required to obtain proper City permits. On April 15th, the City of Chicago will initiate the "On-premise Sign Amnesty Program," a six-month voluntary compliance period to ensure all business owners are compliant with City law. Learn all there is to know about business signs.  Don't miss it!

The workshop will be on Friday, April 2, 2010 from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM in City Hall Room 805.

Chicago Men In Action Needs Your Help! 
Alderman Walter Burnett Jr. of the 27th Ward encourages your support of the 1st Annual BRIDGE THE GAP COMMUNITY BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT on Fridays from July 2nd through August 13, 2010.
The purpose of this tournament is to promote a safer community and a peaceful resolution to a generational curse built on ignorance.  All the games will be played at Seward Park on the corner of Sedgwick and Orleans. 
This first tournament is being  put on by Chicago Men in Action, the 27th Ward Aldermanic Office, and Secretary of State Jesse White.
