Happy Holidays!
DEAR OLD TOWN NEIGHBOR,
Winter didn't sneak up on us this year, did it?  North Avenue turned into  a parking lot last week during a rush hour snow storm and holiday shoppers leapt over slush ponds at every cross walk.  Fortunately the hoilday season is underway and we can look forward to family dinners and cozy nights at home.  Take a look at what's been going on around you in the neighborhood -- and feel free to respond and let us know if you've got some news!
chicago history museumFranklin Fine Arts Holiday Collage Concert
On Tuesday, December 16th, friends and families of Franklin Fine Arts were welcomed to a holiday concert that featured everything from guitar performances to exceprts from The Nutcracker.  Students from first through eighth grades were represented in the performances.  If you are unfamiliar with our neighborhood performing arts magnet school, these CPS students learn core curriculum; but also take classes in four areas: theatre, music, dance, and art.  It's amazing to see all the talent in the student body.  chicago history museum

Only a few days later the students and their teachers took their act to the streets, entertaining local boutique and restaurant patrons on a choral tour through the neighborhood.

The costumes, music, instruments, tap shoes, wigs, set pieces, lights, and sound system for perfomrances at the elementary school look outstanding and they couldn't do it without help from their neighbors and friends.  If you would like to find out how to donate to Franklin Fine Arts, visit them here:Franklin Fine Arts

BRAND NEW BANNERS FOR OLDTOWNchicago history museum
After working with the Merchants and Residents Association, graphic designer Linda Gits came up with a brilliant blue banner that reflects the historic nature of the neighborhood and features some of the local favorites.  Neighborhood organizations and businesses sponsor banners and they are hung at random throughout the neighborhood on North, Sedgwick, LaSalle, Goethe, and Schiller.
If your business missed out on the opportunity this year, OTMRA has nine left to print on.  Just contact us at the office and we can fill you in on the details.  For the time being, take a moment to check out the new blue banners in Old Town.  To check out Linda's other designs: Gits Graphics

Best wishes to all our friends and neighbors for a peaceful holiday season and a safe and happy New Year!  See you in 2009!

Sincerely,

All of us who have been through a couple winters know it is our responsibility to clean the sidewalk in front of our residence or place of business.  The neighborhood is safest and most pleasant when we all observe this ordinance. If you have an issue with the city's removal of snow or ice from your street, lane, or avenue; follow this link to report your concern: REPORT A CONCERN TO THE CITY.

Shoveling can be dangerous for some people, especially those who are relatively inactive.  The City has published the following tips for safe snow removal: SHOVELING TIPS
