Living in community

Sometimes life is all fun and games. Sometimes it's far from it.

That's what I am dealing with now -- a health crisis that has sent me reeling. I am dealing with both the physical and emotional ramifications of another cancer diagnosis.

At times like these, friends can be lifesavers. And, lucky me, I am surrounded by them!

Click here to read more about how my new community of friends have rallied to help me in this challenging time.

Visit Marilyn's blog anytime. And if you have a question or comment, please send her an e-mail. She'd love to hear from you!

pedometer Residents and staff start the year off on the right foot

Emerald Heights residents, staff and even board members have clipped on their pedometers in a community effort to "Walk around the World."

Since this endeavor began in late November, participants have tracked their daily steps and reported them weekly to Director of Resident & Wellness Services Ben Brock, who has been totaling the steps and converting them into miles. He has been tracking the group's progress on a world map in the Emerald Heights living room.

How long will it take them to walk around the world? So far, this group of 111 residents, 58 staff members and 14 board members has "traveled" from Redmond to Karsakbay, Kakakhstan! That's nearly 18.5 million steps -- more than 9,200 miles -- in just 45 days. The entire journey should take about 14 weeks.

Many residents have accumulated their steps on the Nature Trail.

When their journey around the world is complete, all participants will celebrate their accomplishment with a party. Groups with high participation rates and lots of miles will receive special recognition.

Already, some individuals have logged very impressive weekly totals. One resident walked 95,384 steps -- about 47.7 miles -- in one week! Not to be outdone, a staff member reported 111,145 steps in one week -- about 55.6 miles.

Fun Facts:

  • One mile = approximately 2,000 steps
  • The circumference of the earth = 25,000 miles
  • The average American walks 6,201 steps per day (Dr. Tudor-Locke et al. 2004)
  • 10,000 steps per day matches exercises recommendations.

Interested in starting a walking routine?

Walking is a great endurance activity, which helps build "staying power" and improve the health of your heart and circulatory system. It can also have a direct impact on your everyday life, helping you stay strong and fit enough to perform your daily activities, get around, and maintain your independence.

The National Institutes of Health recommend that you build up your endurance gradually, starting with as little as 5 minutes of endurance activities at a time. Then try to build up to at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity endurance activity on most or all days of the week. Try using a pedometer and tracking your miles on a map for an extra challenge!

Meet Andy Kempler

Our newest team member, Andy Kempler, hails from southern California and has enjoyed working in the senior care field for more than 10 years.

He got his start with Transamerica Senior Living in Orange, Calif., as an assistant administrator / marketing director, and eventually moved into not-for-profit continuing care retirement communities.

Notably, Andy was with Front Porch Retirement Communities at Walnut Manor in Anaheim, Calif., when it transitioned from an older, dated community into the new and lively Walnut Village.

Most recently, he worked with Wesley Homes in Des Moines, Wash.

Andy earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from Pitzer College in Claremont, Calif. and a chiropractic degree from Palmer College in Davenport, Iowa.

In Iowa, Andy enjoyed volunteering at the lock and dam (#15) on the Mississippi River between Davenport and Rock Island. He also has worked and volunteered at several theater venues, including the Pageant of the Master in Laguna Beach, Calif. and locally with Seattle Repertory Theater, the Intiman and Edmonds Center of the Arts. He resides in Edmonds and is enjoying exploring and learning about the Pacific Northwest. He likes reading novels and nonfiction, biking, playing tennis and traveling.
