Greetings!
Then we celebrate volunteerism among our residents, board members, staff and wider community. King 5 News anchor Dennis Bounds served as guest speaker last month for a special event honoring all Emerald Heights volunteers. When you add up the numbers, the results are impressive! Resident blogger Marilyn Farrell steps aside this month to give her dog Nessie a chance to howl about the injustice of it all. Sure, human volunteers are fine, but where would you be without "man's best friend"? Finally, our Marketing Team answers some Frequently Asked Questions. Feel free to contact them with any of your own questions. Enjoy! |

Annual Volunteer Breakfast

 | | Staff member Jill Hayes introduced guest speaker Dennis Bounds. |
Volunteers get well-deserved recognition
On April 22, our hardest-working residents -- along with board members and other non-residents who volunteer on campus -- were invited to sit down, relax and be pampered a bit. Staff volunteers decorated the dining room, greeted and seated the 144 guests, served the food and poured the coffee, and handled all the clean up.
After guests were treated to a hearty breakfast burrito and parfait, CEO Lisa Hardy took the stage to announce that 15,951.5 volunteer hours were reported in 2010 throughout the Emerald Heights community. This marks a significant increase over 2009, and reflects the commitment, passion and energy of our residents and friends.
Then guest speaker Dennis Bounds, King 5 News anchor, delighted the audience as he described a day in the life of a news anchor and highlighted some of his volunteer work with Special Olympics.
Finally Brittanie Atwood, Life Enrichment Director for Corwin Center, spoke about how volunteer efforts enhance the lives of the Corwin Center residents.
After another huge "thank you" to the guests, the event officially concluded. But for the staff members who volunteered for clean-up duty, the work was just beginning!

Discover for yourself the rewards of service
Many retirees have discovered great personal satisfaction through volunteer service. In fact, studies have shown that seniors who spend time volunteering are rewarded with improved physical health, mental acuity, and emotional well being. And there is no doubt that the community at large receives great benefit as well, when seniors share their time, skills, expertise and wisdom.
If you would like to learn more about volunteer opportunities in this area, we encourage you to visit the Hopelink website. You can learn about current opportunities, create a volunteer profile and register for an upcoming orientation session.
Or look for opportunities in your own neighborhood. Perhaps you can read with children at your local grade school. Or drive a neighbor to and from church or medical appointments.

Resident Blog: My So-Called Retirement |
| This dog gets no respect!
This month, it's Nessie's turn to give you a dog's view of life at Emerald Heights.
What's got her fur in a bunch this month? Burritos for breakfast... with no doggy bag!
As a former service dog, Nessie knows the value of volunteering, both for the volunteer and for those being served.
Still, it's nice every once in a while to get some recognition for one's efforts. And volunteers at Emerald Heights got some well-deserved recognition earlier this month. It was a wonderful celebration of our volunteers... at least the two-legged variety. Click here to learn more.
Visit Marilyn's blog anytime. And if you have a question or comment, please send her an e-mail. She'd love to hear from you! |
FAQs with the Marketing Team
|
|
 | | Sharon Howell, Susie Quiring, Kelly Blumhagen and Marla Lehnerz welcome your questions. |
Q. Will I have to wait a long time before an apartment is available?
A. That depends on the size of home you desire. We have a few one- and two-bedroom apartments available for immediate reservation at this time. If you are considering a larger style or planning for a future move to Emerald Heights, we encourage you to join our Future Residents program today to gain priority access to the size and style of home you prefer when it becomes available. Q. I have Long Term Care insurance. Would I need to drop this coverage as a resident? How would it work with your Life Care program? A. The insurance experts we have consulted report that most Long Term Care (LTC) policies dove-tail very well with the benefits of Life Care. You may be able to use your LTC insurance benefits to pay your monthly service fees and cover any ancillary charges if you ever require care in the Corwin Center. Q. Who would I call for more information or answers to my questions? A. You can sp eak with any member of our marketing team. We work together to ensure that you receive the best service possible. If one team member is not available, then another can easily step in to provide assistance or answer your questions. You can reach us at 425-556-8220.
