Workplace Recycling

Workplace Recycling Award Logo

Emerald Heights is a fourth-time recipient of King County's "Best Workplaces for Recycling" award. With efforts that range from providing recycling bins to donating surplus furniture to local transitional housing projects and excess food to food banks, Emerald Heights has significantly reduced its need for garbage pick-up.

July 2010
Greetings!

In this month's Connection, we explain the origin of one of our community's most unusual and delightful features: the Garden Railway.

Then, resident blogger Marilyn Farrell reflects on the trail expansion and "what a bunch of old guys with a mission can do"!

CEO Lisa Hardy shares stories of her summer hiking adventures and offers an update on the construction project.

And, finally, if you're considering a move this year, be sure to check out our new two-bedroom home incentives. This is a great time to call and ask for a tour. There is a lot happening here, and we're happy to show it off!

Enjoy!

The Garden Railway brings the resident community together in many ways

When Jim Easley and his wife Lydia began considering their move to a retirement community, there was one thing that was perfectly clear:

"I am not leaving my trains behind," Jim said at the time.

This retired periodontist and longtime train hobbyist had spent the previous 15 years building an elaborate train system that filled his backyard. And he wasn't going anywhere without it.

Marilyn reveals that there is even more construction happening at Emerald Heights than one might think -- and the residents are during the heavy lifting on this project: The Nature Trail expansion.

Hard hikes and hard hats

My husband and I were ready to hit the trails this last month, but the trails weren't really ready for us! More than once, we were forced to turn back by snow and foul weather.

When the sun did finally come out, we were rewarded with some of our favorite hiking experiences here in the northwest.

Click here to learn more and even view a slide show of our recent expeditions. You can also get a quick update on our construction progress.

I welcome you to e-mail me with your comments and questions.
