March 2010
Greetings!

In this month's Connection, we provide some new details about our Annual Open House and Tour of Resident Homes, scheduled for Saturday, March 27. We will have four distinct homes open for touring. Don't miss it!

Then we introduce you to resident Dick Pizzo, who played the role of guest chef for the night last week and offered up some good eating for the Emerald Heights community. He shares fond memories of his life and family in a Q&A.

CEO Lisa Hardy reflects on a challenging hike and the important steps she's taking now to ensure a healthy future for herself and all Emerald Heights employees.

Then resident blogger Marilyn Farrell explains why her lovely new kitchen is the least-used room in her home, and also shares some thought-provoking reader mail. We invite your comments too.

Enjoy!

Resident Dick Pizzo shares old family recipes and love of cooking in special dining event

Dick Pizzo
Antipasti. Italian Wedding Soup. Pesce Salmone. Gnocchi Alfredo. Cavolfiore Fritto. Cannolis.

These were just a few of the gastronomic delights served up by resident Dick Pizzo when he played guest chef for the night.

"Dick started work in the kitchen on Monday, and he prepped alongside the kitchen staff the entire week, " observed Executive Chef Justin Rutledge. "We used his recipes, and he made sure each dish met with his approval."

To create his menu, Dick called on inspiration and some adapted recipes from his grandmothers: Grandma Pizzo, who cooked Sicilian style, and Grandma Bonzani, who cooked northern Italian style.

My heroes and a new focus on wellness

One challenging hike I took this month gave me a new appreciation for strength and determination of my fellow Outdoor Club hikers. If I want to follow in their footsteps, I need to take steps now to stay healthy and strong for decades to come!

I also share some details about our new employee wellness program, designed to keep our staff healthy and happy.

BlogResident Blog: My So-Called Retirement
Marilyn Farrell Photo
The least-used room in my home

When I moved to Emerald Heights, I designed the kitchen of my dreams. Now, for the most part, it sits unused!

But how can you blame me? The dining room serves up delicious, interesting meals each day. And sometimes we have special events to really spice things up.

Click here to learn more about how dining events really bring the community together.

Also, I've been receiving some very interesting reader feedback. I share a couple of these letters this month, and I invite you to write in with your thoughts. I'd like to get a conversation started about what retirement means these days.

Visit my blog anytime. And if you have a question or comment, please send me an e-mail. I'd love to hear from you!

Pass it on! If you would like to share information about Emerald Heights with your friends or family members, we invite you to forward this e-mail using the link below.
