VOICES
From our readers

"I loooved the Emerald Heights Connection with the blog and stories from residents, moving in or planning to move in.

It brings so many memories from when we moved in from California and all the help we experienced from the staff AND new neighbors.

Moving here was the best thing we ever did."

Resident Blog: My So-Called Retirement

Or so I've been told! That may be the greatest irony of my move to Emerald Heights. I finally have the kitchen of my dreams, and I really don't even have to use it!

But I love to cook, so I hosted a dinner party for eight. The menu included my whole-roasted chicken with mango salsa, wild rice, steamed vegetables and a lovely fresh-fruit dessert. But the real treat was sharing the meal with friends. Click here to read more.

Resident Story: Adele Pickett
Adele Pickett AdeleLife is for the Living!

Resident Adele Pickett recognizes that people have a choice of how to go through their lives: existing or really living.

All her life, Adele has chosen living. When her beloved husband died, she needed to take stock and make a new plan. She attended an Emerald Heights open house and was taken with the beautiful grounds, friendly people and services.

"I was impressed with the life care option and thought immediately what a great gift this would be for my children," she said.

She joined the Future Residents list, thinking she wasn't quite ready to move. But just six months later, she was contacted about a one-bedroom apartment.

"I had to jump at the chance to move," Adele says. "There were five people ahead of me on the waiting list, but they weren't ready. I didn't know when I might be called again. I was determined to be ready, willing and able."

Adele is now settled into her one-bedroom apartment, enjoying her new neighbors, spending time with her children and grandchildren, volunteering at Evergreen Hospital, and living her life on her own terms.

You can read more of Adele's story -- and her clever strategy for meeting and learning other people's stories -- online here.
