The Bridge to Literacy

by John Corcoran

This book is a beacon of light for educators, parents, community leaders, and law makers who are instrumental in improving the literacy ability of children and adults in English speaking countries.  Literacy advocates will want to read it!

John Corcoran, author of the newly released bookThe Bridge to Literacy, was unable to read, write, or spell until age 48 even though he graduated from high school and college and then taught high school for 17 years. The riveting story of his personal journey is contained in his first book, The Teacher Who Couldn't Read.   For the past 20 years, he has championed effective literacy practices through a variety of channels.   He has served as a two time presidential appointee for the National Institute for Literacy.  His story has been shared through his speeches to teachers and community groups as well as in publications such as Readers Digest and People magazine and on Oprah and other shows.  He is the founder of the John Corcoran Foundation www.johncorcoranfoundation.com which promotes literacy and provides tutoring for students of all ages using research-based instructional methods.

His current book describes the depth of the illiteracy crisis that has infiltrated virtually every school and community across America; it also lays out a blueprint describing how to address this crisis.  He has an amazing grasp on the research that has proven what defines effective literacy instruction and comes from the unique perspective of a former teacher and former functional illiterate whose life mission is to ensure others don't suffer unnecessarily as he did.   You can listen to his interview with Dr. Robin Smith on Oprah and Friends Radio (XM or Sirius) , October 27th at 4:00pm ET.  Look for an article about his book in USA Today within the next week.

This book is a powerful catalyst for anyone interested in improving literacy in our country.  Read it - share it - use it to form a study group/book club with friends or colleagues - tell others about it.  The information in this book has the potential to result in revolutionary progress in the teaching and learning of reading, writing, and spelling.
