Wolf Eyes

Greetings!

With the release this week of state test scores, also came the 2010 state school rankings.  We are so pleased to announce that Washington Elementary remained the number fifth ranked school in the state.  Middle school moved up two spots this year and is now ranked number five in the state as well. We are so proud of our school and especially our wonderful students!!!!!

We are looking forward to parent/teacher conferences this Thursday (11/4) and next Tuesday (11/9).  Since the teachers only have a short amount of time allotted for each conferences, here are a few tip to ensure that you have a successful conference:

1. Ask your child if there is anything he/she would like you to discuss with the teacher.

2. Jot down everything that you want to talk about at the conference.

3. Arrive a few minutes early.

4. Avoid lengthy discussions of topics that are not related to the purpose of the conference.

5. Be open-minded to suggestions from the teacher.

6. Take notes about what was discussed to share with your child.

7. Limit your conference only to your allotted time.

It is so hard to believe that November is here already.  Now that the students have had time to adjust to our routine in the morning, we ask that parents do their best to drop students off at the door in the morning rather than walking them to their classrooms.  This will allow for teachers to begin their morning routines promptly without disruptions to our learning environment.  We really appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter.

Have a wonderful week!
Mrs. Faber & Mrs. Hayes

ECO-CLUB News

Our fourth and fifth grade ECO-Club members attended our first two meetings this month.  At present, we have about 27 members.  They are very enthusiastic and ready to make some change.

We got moving last Monday by gathering outside, during our meeting time and did a school grounds clean up.  The students wanted to specifically tackle the wooded area near the playground.  Three garbage bags later we succeeded in a decent clean up.  They were quite happy with the results even though we did it within the 15 minute recess time period.

Our next endeavor is on a larger scale.  The club members have decided to collect items for Noah's Ark Animal Shelter.  Noah's Ark is Rockford's only no kill shelter.  The items collected are ones needed to clean and feed those animals kept there.  We began Wednesday, October 27, and will continue until Friday, November 19.  The items needed include:

garbage bags

bleach

liquid laundry detergent

vinyl or latex gloves

rechargeable AA batteries

NEW mops/brooms/brushes/scouring pads

Postage stamps

Office Supplies (white copy paper)

canned or dry dog and cat food (for their pet pantry to give to those in need)

paper towels

Collection boxes are located near the front of the school.  Check out Noah's Ark website:  www.noahsarkanimals.org

ECO-Club's next meeting is November 1st.

Any questions?  Please contact me, Mrs. Woodin.

6th Grade Update

Sixth Grade had an exciting day on October 15th when we had our "Careers on Wheels" day here at Washington.  Mr. Aaron Wilson and the Channel 23 News team were here and preformed a live broadcast from our parking lot.  Even some of our students were part of the program.  All of the sixth graders were able to experience many of the different types of careers in Rockford that involve travel.  We are very grateful for the many volunteers who came and spent the afternoon informing us about the daily activities in their careers.  Some of these companies were the Rock River Valley Blood Center, Williams Construction, Mr. Norms Garage, UPS, Mr. Noble: Personal Trainer, Rockford School Bus Dept., Rockford Police Dept., and the Rockford Fire Dept.   It was an informative day where the students learned how math, reading, and writing are used in every career in different ways.

Our first quarter of middle school ended on Friday October 29, 2010. Parent/Teacher/Student conference sign-up forms went home with the students and were to be returned back to school with the family's preference of evening, either Nov. 4th or Nov. 9th.  Conference times are almost full; please contact the sixth grade team by email if you haven't received anything home about your conference time. We want to make sure that all families that would like a conference receive one.

From the Teachers:

MATH- We just finished our unit on fractions and will now begin two-dimensional geometry.

*Students will need a protractor.

SOCIAL STUDIES- Students are learning about the ancient civilizations in the Fertile Crescent by playing a simulation game.  The students belong to clans and conquer lands and battle enemies.  They need to make decisions based on strategy and the restraints of money and resources.  They are learning A LOT without even realizing it!

ENGLISH- Students are in the beginning stages of creating characters for the short stories they will be writing.  Be watching for information and due dates about this writing project.

SCIENCE- Students took a test on Friday on Chapter 1: the Nature of Science.  Some of the concepts from this chapter were: the Scientific Method, variables, controls, hypothesis, and theories.

HUMANITIES-Students have been investigating the elements of fiction through reading various stories from the new Pearson reading series.  There will be an Elements of Fiction quiz next week.

*Parents should look at their child's binders and make sure they are still organized.

*Parents should check their student's assignment notebooks and make sure their child is filling them out on a daily basis.

Talent Show News

Just a bit of information as we get ready for our last weeks of rehearsal.  The date of the performance is November 10.  We will be doing a matinee during the afternoon that day 4th - 6th hours.  The evening performance starts at 6:30 PM.  We ask that cast members be here by 6:00 and tech crew be here by 5:45.  If students need to stay after school until the show, they need to bring money for dinner and have some kind of homework or reading to do until their call time.  There is no admittance fee to get into the show.

Our MANDATORY dress-tech rehearsals will be Friday, November 5th for ACT I until 6:00 PM and Monday, November 8th for ACT II until 6:00 PM.  Students need to stay the whole time so that they can watch each others presentation and we can work on a curtain call.  There will not be any activity bus on those days, so students need to make sure that they have their rides here by 6 PM.  Make sure that you have all props, costumes, music, CD's for your dress rehearsal day.    All songs, dances, skits and performances should be performance ready by dress rehearsal.  All Techies will need to be here both Friday and Monday nights until 6 PM

Athletics
All students attending after school activities need to be picked up by 4:30.  Anyone not picked up by 4:40 will need to take the activity bus to the school nearest your home.
