Wolf Eyes

Greetings!
We are off to a very strong start this school year.  Progress reports were sent home for the middle school students last week.  If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child's progress, please contact the teacher.

If you are picking your child up from school, please pull all the way forward in the pick-up lane.  We also ask that you please do not park in the pick up lane.  We thank you very much for your cooperation in our pick-up procedures.

Thanks to all the parents who have picked their child up on time for after school activities.  Middle school students who are not picked up on time will be encouraged to take the activity bus.

We do currently have an opening for a lunch aide position.  This position is 1.5 hours per day.  It does include a half hour of outside duty.  If you are interested in this position, please inquire in the office.

Have a wonderful week!

Where does the Gifted Program stand today?

What are your hopes and dreams for our program?

I'm looking forward to meeting with you tomorrow, October 5, 2010, at the PTO meeting.  We will meet in the Washington Library at 6:30 pm. to talk about creating a vision for a world-class gifted program.  Be ready to share your hopes and dreams for the program.  No idea is too great or too small to consider.  I'll see you there!

I had a similar meeting with PGE at Auburn High School last weeks.  As always, our parents and students had great ideas!  I will be incorporating all of this feedback into my report to Dr. Sheffield and the School Board.

Playground Update

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! to the 15 parents who came out last week to help us get the playground ready for the climbing wall.  They worked for more than 6 hours and did a fantastic job!  Way to go!

6th Grade News

Greetings from Sixth grade!

We are off to such a busy start this year.

We had a great time at Camp Winnebago. There were several problem solving activities that we participated in. Sometimes they were very frustrating, but in the end we solved all of them with lots of teamwork!! We hope you talked to your youngster about what they did at camp. Team building is something we work on all year long.

Then we had author, Justin Somper come to Washington to talk to us about his book and the craft of writing. Wonderland Books brought Mr. Somper to town and we enjoyed his storytelling. He spent some time telling us how he organizes his writing, tackles writers' block and where ideas come from. Lots of hands shot up when he asked who wanted to be a writer. Mr. Peterson was excited to see that since he has lots of writing planned for them this year!

Our first Progress Reports went out using the new computer system, and as you can imagine there are some errors. They won't be mailed every time but sixth grade will be sending out progress reports more frequently so we (student, parent, and teacher) can stay on top of your student's progress. Please be patient with us while we figure out this new system.

We are looking forward to the new Careers on Wheels program planned for Friday, October 15. We will be spending the afternoon outside, with a kick-off by Aaron Wilson, broadcasting at noon on CBS. We'll be outside from 12:00 - 2:30, rain or shine, so be sure your student dresses for the weather.

We have a special request: PLEASE check your student's assignment notebook daily. Some children are choosing not to use them and it is causing problems already. This is a habit worth building. As adults most of us rely on planners/calendars to stay on top of our busy lives. We need to help the students develop that habit. Some students need to have their planners signed by each teacher every day. We are happy to accommodate that request. However, it is the youngsters' responsibility to come to us in class (beginning/end) to get our signature. We would, then, ask you to sign each day that you have looked it over with your student.

One more thing: Cleaning out folders/binders with your student is great. Please do NOT throw away papers until the semester. Occasionally students need to refer back to them as reference. Additionally, the new grade system, along with human error, can create the need to verify assignment grades.

Keep an eye out for the following:

Math: just started on new unit on decimals, percents, and fractions

Science: There will be a two day test on the metric system: 10.07.10 - lab portion/10.08.10 - written portion

English: just finished up parts of speech/parts of sentences/beginning expository writing

Humanities: genre quiz 10.04.10/ Book reports are due on 10.08.10

Social Studies: just finished unit on Early Humans - moving on to ancient Mesopotamia

Chess Club

Chess Club officially started last Tuesday.  We have more than 100 players registered.  If you are interested in chess club but have not yet completed a registration form, please do so as soon as possible.

Not sure if chess is for you?  By all means, try it out.  If you change your mind, just let us know.  If you decide to stop for now, you will always be welcome to join again in the future.

It is very important that all students sign in when they enter our cafeteria and that parents sign them out when they leave (on-time, no later than 4:30).  This system has prevented lots of worries in the past about where our players are.  Thanks for your cooperation!

Fall Chess Challenge

Washington Academy will once again be hosting the Fall Scholastic Chess Challenge.  The tournament will be held on October 16, 2010.  Registration forms can be accessed at the Rockford Scholastic Chess website or located on the Chess Club bulletin board.

We will need several volunteers to help make this another successful tournament.  If you can help, we will have sign-up sheets available at Chess Club meetings or you can contact Souk Shun.  We will need help on Friday, October 15 to set up the gym and on October 16 for the actual tournament.
