8th Grade News
We are studying the Progressive Era in Social Studies (1890-1920) that covers three chapters in our textbook. We are currently in the chapter that deals with domestic issues and legislation passed during Theodore Roosevelt's, William Taft's, and Woodrow Wilson's presidencies. We have examined in detail the difference between Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois, the Springfield Riot of 1908, and Upton Sinclair's book, The Jungle. I had hoped to do a project on the economy of hurricanes by comparing and contrasting the Galveston hurricane of 1906 with Hurricane Katrina, but the district still needs to get our laptops running XP up and running. I know that some students with home computers have started this assignment, so they just need to keep the information they gathered in a safe place until further notice. I do have a date set for one of our field trips. We will be going to the Holocaust Museum in Skokie, IL on January 7th. Mrs. Willson and I should be teaching about the Holocaust about this time. I will be looking for at least 10 parents to accompany us on this all day field trip. More information will follow before Winter Break. Keep in mind that we will be taking a Coach bus, so the cost per student will be over the average cost of an in town field trip. With all the holidays in December, you may want to plan for this expense in advance.
In 8th grade English students are studying the parts of speech and poetry. We are reading and analyzing Romantic and Victorian poetry and have or will study works by poets such as William Blake, Robert Frost, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Robert Browning, Lord Byron, Lord Alfred Tennyson, and John Keats. Students have turned in their poetry projects this week. There was a great deal of creativity and quality in the projects completed. Over the next two weeks students will finish the poetry unit and will be tested around September 30, 2010 over the poetry they studied in class. Students will also review their knowledge of adjectives next week. With every part of speech, students learn Shakespeare-coined nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Many students were surprised to discover that Shakespeare coined over 10,000 words in the English language. This year promises to be exciting, educational, and inspirational in 8th grade English .
Soon the 8th graders will be talked to about Rotary. Any interested 8th graders will be asked to write an essay on why they are good candidates. |
