! Road Construction !

Getting to School
The corner of Montague Street and West Street.will be under construction this week, so you may have difficulty getting to school.  Hopefully, they will be done before we come back next week.  For now, you might want to turn onto Court Street and drive west on Knowlton to West Street.

  Greetings!

We have a lot to be thankful for at Washington Academy.  We are thankful that we have so many wonderful students!  Scroll down this email to see our honor roll!  We are thankful for our families.  You demonstrate your caring and concern in so many ways, such as our wonderful Parent Teacher Conference attendance and our new playground.
We are thankful for our health.  Although we've had quite a few absences just lately, for the most part it seems like we've weathered the fall illnesses and are returning to our normal terrific student attendance.
We are also thankful for the bounty that allows us to give during this holiday season.  Our barrels for the Salvation Army food drive are scattered around the building and beginning to fill.  Keep sending in cans and other non-perishable items.  Our goal is to fill at least 10 barrels by December 17.
    Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Holiday Concert
December 8
Our Middle School Band and Orchestra students will be performing two concerts on Tuesday, December 8.  There will be two to make your evening shorter and the auditorium not as crowded.  Here is the schedule:
6:00 - Orchestra students arrive to warm - up
6:30 - Orchestra concert in the Auditorium
7:00 - Band students arrive to warm - up
7:30 - Band concert in the Auditorium

For the 7th and 8th graders, the concert will be worth 200 points, not the 100 that was in the handbook that I passed out at the beginning of the year.  For the 6th graders the concert is still worth 100 points.  Everyone is required to stay for the entire concert and stay with their group.

T-Shirts
We have ordered t-shirts to wear for performances.  They are black with gray or silver writing.  They will be here right after Thanksgiving.  The cost of the shirt is $7.00.  If you make out a check make it payable to Washington PTO.

All students should wear black dress pants, black socks (for the boys) and black dress shoes.

Comments from Mr. Hoffman
First, let me tell you how well your students are doing.  They are all working hard for me, even if for some of them it is a change.  I have not heard any, "We used to do it this way".

I want to thank you in advance for your co-operation in getting the proper clothes and having everyone stay for the entire concert.  I think that it is important that the students hear and support the other groups as they perform.  I am not requiring the orchestra students to stay for the band concert or the band students come early for the orchestra concert, although they are welcome if they want to hear the other groups perform.

Thanks again for all of your support and cooperation to the new guy.
Athletics & Activities
Middle School Winter Sports
The season for wrestling, swimming and girls basketball begins on January 4.  Let's avoid any concerns that your athlete may not be able to participate.  Get your physicals in NOW!

Chess
Congratulations Wolves!  We have had terrific showings the past two weekends.  On November 14, we attended the RESA Team Tournament.  Two of our teams tied for first place.

On November 21 & 22, we sent 4 teams to the National Youth Action Tournament in Oak Brook.  We competed against over 50 teams from as far away as Texas, Florida and New York.  For complete tournament results, check out our Chess Club Web Page.

Middle School Cheerleading
We can use your help!  Our cheerleading coach, Shelly Greenlee, would like one or more helpers.  There are many ways you can help out - both big and small.  If you are able to volunteer, please contact Matt Smith, our athletic director.

Washington Middle School Cheerleaders want to thank you for your support at our bake sale!

Middle School Boys Basketball
Tuesday night's game against Barbour has been cancelled, so the only games this week are tonight's games at Eisenhower.  Sixth grade will now play Lutheran on November 30 at home at 6:15.

Basketball Volunteers Needed
We need volunteers to keep score and work the clock at basketball games this year.  Games start at 4:30/5:30/6:30.  If you are interested in occasionally doing one of these, please contact matthew.smith@rps205.com

REBA Boys Basketball, Grades 4-5
Basketball tryouts will be:
  • Boys, 4th Grade: December 1, 8:00 - 9:00 am
  • Boys, 5th Grade: December 2, 6:15 - 8:30
  • Girls, 4th Grade: December 3, 6:15 - 8:15
  • Gifls, 5th Grade: December 3, 3:30 - 5:15
Concessions
Please contact Becky Woollacott if you can help with concessions.

Eligibility
In order to remain eligible from week to week, athletes are expected to maintain good grades and to behave in the classroom and hallways.  Students with low grades must attend before-school tutoring in order to stay eligible.  Mr. Smith, our athletic director, and the team coach will let athletes know if they need to attend tutoring.

Thinking Ahead to College
As compliance with the NCAA Clearinghouse is crucial to a students eligibility to participate in college athletics, we will be holding informational meetings in all four of our traditional high schools. The last remaining meeting is tonight at Guilford High School at 6:30.  It is strongly recommended that any parents or guardians of students in grade 7 through 12 attend and learn more about curriculum courses, test scores and credits.
PTO News
Popcorn Days
Our new popcorn popper has arrived and the PTO would like to bring back "Popcorn Days".  This would occur one Friday a month.  Students would be able to purchase small bags of popcorn at the end of the day.  In order for this to be successful, we would need some parents who would be willing to volunteer.  If you would be interested in participating in this project, please contact Carrie Adamany.

Spirit Wear
Now's your chance to order our new Spirit Wear designs. They are a hit with students AND staff!!  To see the styles, check out the PTO page on the Washington website.  Click on the Catalog or Order Form.

Book Fair
The totals are in - and thank you Washington Families for making our book fair a success!  Your commitment to reading has really shown this fall!  We sold $10,047.29 in books after taxes.  In addition, the librarian pulled $1.389.97 in books for our library, and has an additional $2,331.83 in cash to spend on books for our library.  Once again, thank you so much for supporting literacy in our school!

Last Call for Market Day Chair!!!!
The PTO is still looking for a chairperson/chairpeople who would be willing to investigate the Market Day fundraiser.  There are several possibilities that Market Day offers.  We have one interested parent who would be willing to share the responsibility with another parent.  If you are interested, please contact Carrie Adamany, PTO president.

Next PTO Meeting
There will be no PTO Meeting in December.  Our January meeting will focus on fundraising opportunities for the 2010-2011 school year.  We are also planning an informational speaker on internet safety.  More information to come!

Don't Forget!
We are still collecting box tops, Campbell Soup labels, Swiss Valley milk caps, and Capri Sun pouches.  Just a few seconds of your time makes a big impact on our school fundraising and improvements around our building.  THANK YOU!!!!

All PTO activities are posted on the Washington's web site Calendar.
