Maine Diner Makes a Big Splash at New Orleans Roadfood Fetival

Gallons of Glorious Seafood Chowder Flowed and Received National Acclaim!

Exhausting, exciting and oh so worth it!

The Maine Diner made its official debut at the second annual New Orleans Roadfood Festival in the heart of the French Quarter March 26-28th as one of two New England entries at this prestigious event that brought together the best chefs showcasing their regional cuisine in the nation.

The Roadfood Festival is the creation of a countrywide team of "foodies," including Jane and Michael Stern, best-selling authors of Roadfood and regular guests on public radio's "The Splendid Table", as well as Stephen Rushmore, Jr., the creator of Roadfood.com.

According to Maine Diner Co-Owner Myles Henry, the Diner staff served 75 gallons of their savory home-made seafood chowder to 1,500 new Maine Diner fans. People clamored for it in the hustling and bustling streets jam-packed with people.

"There is just no other way to say it...we had a terrific time and we want to thank everyone who organized this event and made it possible. I'd like to say a special thank you to the wonderful people of New Orleans who welcomed the Maine Diner with open arms, and hearty appetites...you are a  very special city. We look forward to coming back next year," Henry said.

The New Orleans Roadfood Festival gathered 20 vendors-- from Louisiana and across the country--to serve up legendary dishes from landmark restaurants. In addition to the Maine Diner's seafood chowder visitors got to enjoy dishes such as a real Texas barbecue from Louie Mueller's and Shrimp Uggie made by Anthony and Gail Uglesich.  Turtle Alley from Gloucester, Massachusetts brought chocolates.

Maine Diner honored as one of the best in the state by the Maine Restaurant Association

On the heels of a whirlwind tour to the prestigious New Orleans Roadfood Festival, the Henry family was barely off the plane when they were handed one of the most prestigious culinary awards in the state by the Maine Restaurant Association: the 2010 Restaurateur of the Year Award which they received at a special ceremony Tuesday, March 30th at the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland.

"This is just an incredible honor and the culmination of many years of teamwork and effort with our devoted staff. This belongs to them as much as it does to my brother Dick and me," Maine Diner Co-Owner Myles Henry said. "For more than two decades it has been a daily commitment to excellence and delivering the best home-cooked food we know how to make."

Maine Restaurant Association President and CEO Richard Grotton first broke the news of the award to the Henrys in December, noting the award is based on nominations, how long a business is a member of the association, their contributions to the organization, their local reputation and how the community feels about the business.

"On all counts the Maine Diner received the highest accolades, and was a clear winner," Grotton said.

The Henrys and their staff of approximately 60 employees celebrated service to their 5 Millionth Customer just a year ago on the heels of their 25th Silver Anniversary. Then last month the Maine Diner was chosen to showcase its hallmark seafood chowder in their first visit to the New Orleans RoadFood Festival as the sole New England entry - a major out-of-state accomplishment.

Both Myles and Dick Henry say the success is based on a formula they will never change.

"We treat each guest with the hospitality we would extend to those coming into our own home and serve them the best home-cooking possible with fast and friendly service at a great price," Henry said.
