Farmer Bob's Victory Garden: Our Own Produce Served
If you come 'round back of the Maine Diner there's a sight to behold: a garden bursting with fresh vegetables from beans to zucchini, towering sunflowers, and of course, Farmer Bob. After 36 years of work as an engineer, Bob Henry recently became retired. At his wife's suggestion, he decided to tend to the Maine Diner Garden, a fixture on the property for years.
The garden churns out its share of fresh produce for the restaurant's tables: broccoli, green and yellow beans, eggplant, summer squash, cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes and pumpkins, to name a few. You can rest assured that most of the fresh vegetables on your plate were picked from out back.
"On our sign out front it says "our own produce served" and here it actually means something. I feel lucky to be doing what I am doing," says Bob. "It is a good feeling to know where your food is coming from."
So the next time you swing by the Diner, or if you are standing in line, swing out back and chat a spell. Sit at one of the picnic tables, or check out the birdhouses. Bob's got lots of good stories and gardening tips he'd be happy to share.

Make-A-Wish Benefit Art Show at the Maine Diner Raises $1000
Art lovers from near and far came out once again to support the 12th Annual "Derek's Days" Make-A-Wish Benefit Art Show held at the Maine Diner this past September and helped the project earn $1,000 for the charity. Vermont artist 'Diner Don' Sawyer was once again on-site to share his unique brand of Americana artwork with his depictions of famous road-side diners (affectionately dubbed "Dine-Art".) This is a special art show he holds annually in memory of his son Derek, whom he lost years ago to leukemia. "Despite our rescheduling (due to weather) and the economy we have some very loyal locals who came out to support the event again this year. While we raised less than we usually do, our contributions still help to brighten the lives of the children," Sawyer said. Proceeds of event were awarded to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, an organization that honors the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. Sawyer says the charity has 200 volunteers in Maine. | |
