Over the years during our travels through Nevada we have seen wild horses. This year we made it a priority to photograph these living remnants of the wild west.
In mid January we headed off to the desert east of Carson City. guided by our past sightings and input from the Bureau of Land Management and local residents we were able to locate a small herd of wild horses. By using our truck as a blind we tracked this small herd for the majority of the day as they grazed among the rabbit brush. Late in the afternoon the group we were following met up with another group. Several young males from the two groups decided to blow off some steam and have a little fun, which gave us a great show.

| Fort Churchill State Park |
As we spent the majority of the day with the horses by the time we left them it was getting dark and we needed a place to spend the night. The closest place to spend the night was Fort Churchill, NV. Fort Churchill was once an active U.S. Army fort, built in 1861 to provide protection for early settlers. They have a visitor's center which contains exhibits telling the colorful history of Fort Churchill. However, what drew us to this place is it's unique ruins.
The fort buildings were built of adobe, with many of these buildings still standing. When the early morning light hits the adobe walls they light with a warm gold glow. This, coupled with the snow capped Sierra mountains in the background, makes this a very interesting stop in western Nevada.
Fort Churchill has a small 20 site campground. Since the overnight temperature dropped to 10 degrees we did not have a problem finding an open campsite.

| Carson River |
|
There are two routes into Fort Churchill. One is to take Hwy 50 to 95 south and follow the signs. The other way is to take Fort Churchill Road which is a 15 mile dirt washboard road. It is bumpy but can easily be driven with a passenger car.
This road runs parallel to the Carson River. As mentioned above it was 10 degrees the morning we were there. The Carson river was frozen and the air was crisp and clear, perfect conditions for great photos. |
