Pastor's Corner

"FAMILIAR AND NEW"

I just attended a musical festival to cheer on my daughter, Chloe, and all the other MUMC youth who participated in the event. I enjoyed the clinician, Dr. Marci Major, who worked with each choral group and helped them to experience and sing their familiar and well-rehearsed music in new ways. At times, they tried new facial expressions. At other times, they moved their bodies or their hands. New sounds emerged from the same singers-they and the audience were impressed!

Festival of Sharing

The Festival of Sharing kit for February is the Layette Kit. Layettes provide gentle warmth for infants and basic tools for young mothers struggling with poverty or the consequences of natural disaster. Cost of the kit is $39. Click here for a list of the supplies that go into each kit.

Food Drive

The 3rd Grade Sunday School class is collecting non-perishable food items during the month of February for the Columbia food pantry. Please make donations outside the church office (a marked bag has been placed in the waiting area) or in the 3rd Grade Sunday School classroom, Room 405. Thank you for helping with this mission!

Love Your Body Workshop

On Sunday, February 19th, Suzy Day, Coordinator of the Women's Center at MU, will conduct a workshop called "Love Your Body."  It will have an emphasis upon physical and spiritual self-care.  It will take place from 3-5pm in CLC 106-110. Cookies and lemonade will be provided. While the workshop is being sponsored by the UMW Circles, it is open to all women of the MUMC congregation and the college campuses. Mothers are encouraged to bring their teen-aged daughters as well. Email
RSVP@moumc.org to register.

Meet Dana!

Dana Scheurmann is our Cornerstone Coffee Shop manager.  Dana is:
* a lifelong Methodist, and the daughter of a United Methodist pastor
* an experienced barista,  and creator of coffee drinks for her mother's  coffee business
* a junior at MU, majoring in Journalism
* a graphic artist (see our posters for the MU@MUMC sermon series)
* a great person to be around!
Stop by the Cornerstone Coffee Shop and meet Dana. Be sure to sit in one of the new comfortable chairs, or meet a group at one of the longer tables that have been added. If all goes well, the Coffee Shop will be open for business on Sunday, February 26th, with a menu featuring cappuccinos, lattes, sodas and pastries.  In the meantime, hot LaKota coffee will be available on Sunday morning.  The Cornerstone Coffee Shop is located in the west wing of the Connector.

Mozambique Notes

MUMC's covenant partner church in Mozambique is Malhangalene UMC in Maputo, the capital city. Membership in this church is over 1000, with 7 local churches included. The church building construction was started in 1998. It is a beautiful building, and the congregation has plans to build additional structures around the church, particularly for child care and education. The parsonage is located in an apartment building nearby. Read More

Tax-Aide

Tax-Aide, a free income tax preparation program, is now available at Missouri UMC. Appointments will be done on a first come, first served basis. Tax preparers will be here on Mondays and Tuesdays from 3-7pm, and on Thursdays from 10am-2pm. The program is open to people of all ages and incomes, and will run through April 17th.

Valentine's Spaghetti Supper

Avoid the crowds of Valentine's Day and bring your sweetheart to a special spaghetti supper, provided by our MUMC youth, as they raise funds for their summer mission trip to Joplin, MO. Join us on Wednesday, February 15th, at 5:30pm as a part of the WNL program - meal prices are the same ($6 for adults, $4 for children), but opportunities for additional donations and tips will be available. This is a wonderfully easy, and tasty way to support our youth as they prepare to reach out and support others.
