SIGMA featured on Food Network television show Invention Hunters
In May, Sigma Design Company was featured on the Food Network show Invention Hunters. The show follows Patrick Raymond and Steve Greenberg who visit inventors across the nation hoping to find the next "million dollar idea." Once convinced, Raymond and Greenberg bring the inventors to New York City to pitch their ideas to Lifetime Brands, Inc., one of the largest housewares manufacturers in the world.
Sigma Design Company, in collaboration with Gordon Perry Design, were recruited in March to design and create an improved working prototype for the "Pure Sure," a valve for carton beverages, which allows children to pour a drink themselves without making a mess.

The television crew gets ready to film at Sigma's new innovation center in Middlesex.
|
With only two weeks to complete the task, Sigma Senior Design Engineer Bob Messinger turned up the heat to 'plate up a winner.' A visit to Sigma Design Company's new innovation center in Middlesex, NJ was all it took to convince the scouts that the new and improved product was ready for round one.

Sigma Design co-owners Jerry Lynch and Debbie Lynch, who heads a Culinary Arts Program at Middlesex County College, were excited to be a part of this show. A food-related invention was a perfect match for the team at Sigma Design Company, which can work with inventors from concept to market.

Our Capabilities: Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis
Sigma has recently added Nonlinear FEA to its suite of advanced engineering tools.
This new offering will allow Sigma's engineers and designers to better tackle some of the toughest challenges by more accurately simulating nonlinear behavior, including plastics analysis, large deformation and nonlinear/time-based loading. Of particular interest is the team's ability to effectively load and unload a part, thereby predicting any permanent deformation that may occur.
Recent clients have sent preliminary plastic models for review, enabling quick review of proposed design changes and their effects on part integrity, before more expensive prototypes and tooling are manufactured. Additionally, models were simulated at elevated temperatures to recreate the real-world testing scenarios the part was designed to withstand.
Nonlinear FEA is another tool in Sigma Design's advanced engineering toolbox, and complements the years of plastic part experience held by Sigma's design and engineering team.

People Power: Eugene (Gene) Starr, Senior Designer
Eugene (Gene) Starr is a Senior Designer for Sigma Design Company. He has been with the company for 28 years and works on the mechanical designs for projects.
Projects Gene has recently worked on include: an

invasive gallbladder removal tool prototype, Glen Mills French Press G-M™, which is used for biological cell disruption, and New Energy Technologies, Inc.'s Motion Power™ Heavy system. This system is capable of generating electricity from moving vehicles. When a truck drives over the system it will slow the vehicle down while also producing electricity.
Gene's skills in layout and development of complex machinery allows Sigma to develop highly-engineered electromechanical systems and subassemblies.
When he's not at Sigma you can find Gene at the Millington Volunteer Fire Company, where he previously served as the Chief.
What Gene likes best about working at Sigma is the relationship with his co-workers. "We work well together," he said.
