Volcanoes - Altitude, Sulfur, & Lava, Oh My!

Have you ever seen a volcano in person? climbed one? roasted marshmallows over its lava?

Global Soul Adventures took some time during the past months to get to know a few of Central America's most prominent volcanoes.

Boquete, Panama - Volcan Baru - a 10-hour round-trip  journey led us up to the the highest point in all of Panama.  From the "bird's eye view"  atop you can take in a 360 panorama of 7 inactive craters - incredible!

Isla de Ometepe ,Nicaragua - Volcan Concepcion & Volcan Madera. - situated in Lago Nicaragua, an isthmus formed between them now serves as the adventure link between exploring both!  To venture up either of these is quite a steep and demanding climb, rewarded by the best views of the island.

Granada, Nicaragua - Laguna Apoyo, an inactive crater, is now a gorgeous lake vista from the quaint pueblo of Catarina.

Masaya, Nicaragua - Volcan Masaya -cruise up by foot or car to the edge of the active (and often gaseous) crater, where cars park backwards for quick exit in the case of a wind shift or start of eruption!

Antigua, Guatemala - Volcan Pacaya - probably the most popular, because you can walk along the lava's crust and right up to the edge of the glowing orange flow and even roast a few marshmallows!

Each of the active volcanoes necessitates the utmost awareness and respect from visitors, as they may change their activity with only a moment's notice.  Therefore, traveling with a guide to most locations or checking with locals before an ascent is recommended.

Venturing around the 2nd Largest Barrier Reef
The Caribbean Sea, host to the 2nd largest Barrier Reef in the world, offers too many enticing spots to visit - a great dilemma!

With just about every color of tropical fish you can imagine and warm turquoise blue
waters, the part of the reef just off Roatan Island, Honduras most certainly qualiGSA Logofies as paradise.  The reef's walls and channels are quite dramatic in areas, offering drop-offs of 30-40ft. and beyond!  The vibe in the western side of the island is catered to divers and snorkelers by day and sunset chasers by night and even some who gravitate through the neighborhood for some sun salutations instead of piņa coladas!

Swimming with the stingrays, above a couple Eagle Rays and alongside some nurse sharks while snorkeling along the reef offshore from Caye Caulker, Belize, the excitement was of a different sort.  The laid-back, "Go Slow" attitude of the locals makes the experience seem even more Caribbean (if there is such a term!)  Most boats visit a few destinations along the reef, offering multiple drop-in opportunities to get up close and personal with the underwater world.

A common theme of safety and avoiding contact with the coral exists in both places - protecting visitors and this Carribean gem.
