So what is all the buzz about Pilates?
Pilates is a method of core strengthening that evolved from the methodologies of Joseph Pilates. Pilates targets the deep muscles of the trunk that support the spine and are important for maintaining ideal spinal posture and having a strong back.

Pilates has been proven to be an effective treatment strategy for low back pain.

Individuals suffering from pain due to degeneration of intervertebral discs or joints will benefit from Pilates. Strengthening the core will unload discs, joints and muscles within the spine, alleviating pain and preventing "wear and tear" changes within the spinal column. These "wear and tear" changes are the most common cause of low back pain.

Build strength while acquiring flexibility.
Pilates is a method of strength training that does not lead to the development of bulky musculature that can compromise flexibility. You will increase both flexibility and strength through certified Pilates training.
Acquire better movement and body control.

Pilates training will optimize your patterns of movement particularly in the trunk, pelvis and shoulder region. Optimized movement patterns will enhance performance in sport (tennis, golf, running, swimming are just some of the examples).

In addition, Pilates will correct muscular imbalances that may be present and predispose an individual to injury including low back pain, neck pain, hip pain and rotator cuff injuries.

Prevent low back pain and spinal injury.
Scientific studies have found a direct correlation between back pain and core abdominal strength. Improving strength and flexibility through Pilates will decrease the compressional loads that cause damage to the spinal column including the discs, muscles and joints that lead to pain. This is why Pilates is an effective and scientifically proven solution for spinal pain.

At The Physio & Massage Institute, Pilates is offered in a one-on-one format which is superior to group classes for a number of reasons. Firstly, our certified instructors will ensure that you execute optimal form to prevent injury and maximize the benefit.

Our instructors have taken advanced Pilates training courses in spinal rehabilitation and have experience working with clients with low back pain, degenerative disc disease of the back and neck, osteoarthritis of the hip and knee, osteoporosis and sports injuries.
