In this month's Focal Point, we highlight PEPFAR's initiatives in Vietnam, draw attention to the true tri-service nature of the Armed Services Blood Program, and showcase how artillerymen in Fort Hood, Texas supported a recently deployed battalion.
I would like to thank all those that attended this year's military blood program workshop during the 2010 AABB Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Md. It was a great success, highlighted by LTG Eric Schoomaker's presentation. Congratulations to retired Navy CDR W. Patrick Monaghan for winning the 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award in military blood banking. His dedication and hard work has made him a valuable asset to the Armed Services Blood Program, and we look forward to continuing work with him.
Warm regards, COL Francisco Rentas

F alls Church, Va., October 19, 2010-The Armed Services Blood Program's 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient is retired Navy Commander W. Patrick Monaghan, PhD. The award ceremony was conducted at the AABB (formerly the American Association of Blood Banks) Annual Meeting on Oct. 9, 2010, in Baltimore, Md. PEPFAR Spotlight: USNS Mercy Visits Vietnam for Blood Safety Center Opening and Technical Workshop
From May 28, 2010 to June 4, 2010 the USNS Mercy deployed to Nha Trang City, Vietnam to conduct a Blood Center Opening and Technical Workshop. As part of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), Navy Blood Program Director CDR Roland Fahie, MSC, USN, coordinated blood safety training onboard the ship allowing Vietnamese medical personnel to receive training on ABO, Rh, antibody screens, crossmatching, and quality assurance.
The visit also marked the opening of a new HIV/AIDS program at Hospital 87 in Nha Trang, part of PEPFAR's expanding support in the Vietnamese military medical system. The new program provides safe blood products, voluntary counseling, and testing to civilian and military populations in the country. Hospital 87 will be the fifth blood safety location supported by PEPFAR in the country, allowing the program to collect and produce thousands of safe blood units each year.

| Warriors Donate and Support |
The artillerymen and their supporters may be known as "Red Legs," - Army slang for those associated with cannon and artillery - but on Tuesday, August 11, 2010, they bled red for their comrades.
The Warrior battery of 2-20 Field Artillery, 41st Fires Brigade, at Fort Hood, Texas hosted an Armed Services Blood Program blood drive to collect blood donations for deployed troops. Arranged by Capt. DeCarlos Ware, the battery commander, the drive supported the recently deployed battalion, and served as a good example of how a unit can still support blood donors even when recently redeployed from overseas contingency operations.
