ASBPO Bids Farewell to Director, Visionary

CDR Michael C. Libby, Director, ASBPO, is retiring after 23 years of dedication to the U.S. Navy that includes four years of outstanding service at the Department of Defense level as the director of the Armed Services Blood Program Office (ASBPO). "He is a remarkable visionary," says Maj David A. Lincoln, Deputy Director, ASBPO. Respected for his steadfast determination to improve the ASBP, CDR Libby will undoubtedly be missed. "His strategic level thinking and ability to take a nebulous topic and translate it... that's what I'll miss most" adds LTC Michael J. Lopatka, Deputy Director, ASBPO.

On behalf of the entire ASBPO staff, we wish CDR Libby the best of luck as he moves on to the civilian work force.

Please look for a complete story on CDR Libby next week on the ASBP website.
ASBPO Welcomes New Information Management Officer

A warm welcome goes out to Mr. Donald Dahlheimer, the new Deputy Director of Information Management for the ASBPO. With over 30 years of service to the U.S. government and over 25 years of experience in health care administration, Mr. Dahlheimer brings a wealth of knowledge to the program. Looking forward to a new challenge, Mr. Dahlheimer explains, "My main goal at this point is to ensure that any blood management systems are fielded into our operations and that the user communities' requirements to get their job done are met through the information systems."

With sleeves rolled up and spirits high, Mr. Dahlheimer is ready to be a part of a continuously evolving program. Welcome aboard!
Specialists Present on International ASBP Operations at Annual AABB Conference

Maj Barbara Bachman and CDR Roland Fahie described recent operational issues, unique to our military blood support, that their respective Combatant Commands support. Maj Bachman, Lab Manager, Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center, Fort Hood, TX, focused on her unit's accomplishments to improve the safety and availability of blood products in comparison to the previously limited options available to military medical staff in theater, specifically in Afghanistan.

CDR Fahie, U.S. Pacific Command (PACOM) Joint Blood Program Officer, Office of the Command Surgeon, outlined the many humanitarian operations and the assistance PACOM is providing to various countries throughout the Pacific Rim, to include Myanmar, Vietnam, Ethiopia, and Thailand, and the unique role the blood program is playing in the building of relationships with these countries.

Outstanding presentations led by Maj Bachman and CDR Fahie were well received and tremendously appreciated. Many thanks go out to both for representing the ASBP and its efforts in expanding international relationships in support of those in need.
