Paintings from a Thousand Days
Sunday May 10
3.30pm
Tinakilly Country House Hotel
invitation to paintings from a thousand days by Mary Duffy at Tinakilly Wicklow
Pat Kenny is my special guest                   Sunday, May 10th, 3.30pm.

Thanks to all you who of you entered my little competition to "Guess my Special Guest".

I was surprised & delighted with all of
entries, although some of the answers I didn't know whether or not they were intended for the serious pile or the ludicrous suggestion pile (a worthy category in itself!) Either way, everyone who entered before Friday April 17, gets a prize.
And they came from all over - from Montana and New York, as well as Donegal and Dundalk.  The early bird with the right answer was Michael Ryan from Dublin, and the T-shirt for the most ludicrous wrong answer was Leopold Bloom, it went to Denis Sapronov in Moscow.
My personal favourite wrong answer (arrived too late) was Lord Lucan arriving on Shergar. And yes, I do know I made the rules up as I went along, and I might do it differently next time!
But for now, 'Paintings from a Thousand Days' is up, all 48 images. The exhibition is part of the Wicklow Arts Festival, and
is sponsored by Tinakilly Country House Hotel, Rathnew.

The venue is wheelchair accessible and is located 45 kms
from Dublin city centre, just south of Rathnew, off the N11.

How to get to Tinakilly Country House Hotel

Tinakilly House is just outside Rathnew, on the road to Wicklow town. It's forty five mins south of Dublin city centre on a Sunday (32 miles), and about the same time and distance from Gorey in Wexford.  It's 20 mins south of Bray, where the M50 joins the N11 and it's well signposted.
From the roundabout in the centre of the village, head to Wicklow town (R750). The hotel is just inside the 50kms road sign, and opposite the cemetry.

Greetings!

I have a confession. Having focused so much on celebrating 'Painting for a Thousand Days', I have to admit now that I have been painting for a bit longer than that. Mary Duffy, aged 5, 1966
A few years ago I went to Doncaster, in England, to visit my lovely aunt Lena and my uncle Ernie. They left Ireland in 1966. For Lena it was her second time to emigrate and with her, she took this photograph of me. I grew up in Tullamore and the photo was taken in the local Tech.

Twice a week I was taken out of school, (missing knitting class) and was brought to the Tech (now called the VEC), and there John Gilligan was charged with teaching me to paint. Even then I knew the subtext of these efforts. Painting is what people born without arms do, invariably. It's all we can do, really. Well, I kind of liked painting, but resented being put in that particular box.

When Lena and Ernie left with their children, this photograph of me went with them too. It was placed in an envelope, and forgotten about for more than 40 years. During my visit to Doncaster Lena opened an old envelope one day and found this photo. It was a bolt from the blue - a complete surprise to both of us.

Looking at the image then and now, I get that same feeling. I know that little girl with the big bow tie ribbon. I see what looks like a sad face, but really is a face full of concentration. I raise an eyebrow at the memory of the pink ribbon. My knee aches at the height of that paintbrush and the stretch of that left leg. I can smell the powder paint and still feel the texture of the powder dry and chalked wooden floor boards.

And I know that it has taken me a long time to get here, where I am meant to be, right now.  So, I would like to take this opportunity to remind you, , of your invitation to come and celebrate with me next Sunday at Tinakilly Country House Hotel, my forty years of painting.
with every good wish,
 Mary Duffy, aged 5, 1966

Celebratory Gift Certificates
celebrating one thousand days
gift certificate
Over the last week, I have been busy using my fancy embosser with red & gold seals that arrived from Holland. To celebrate my One Thousand Days as a painter, I am offering Gift Certificates to all of you who have bought work from me in the past. Should you have not received yours yet, will you please contact me?  I will arrange for one to be sent to you immediately, or to be at Tinakilly when you arrive. I have sold over fifty paintings in one thousand days. Several buyers have more than one, and as there are numbers involved, I can get confused easily. The certificates are valid until the end of August this year, and may be used to purchase work at this forthcoming exhibition at Tinakilly Country House hotel or from my website
