August 2010
Dear Friends,

I'm on vacation this week.  Actually, let me rephrase that.  I'm cleaning out the garage and re-organizing the office this week.  And getting the car repaired.  And getting my yearly physical.  And that's my vacation.  I'm just trying to shorten my "to do list" a little.

One of the more pleasant things on my list is a trip to San Diego from August 19 - 23.  During that time I'm doing an event at the Jenna Druck Foundation (which I've been told is full) as well as a Small Spirit Circle and private sessions.

Of course I won't be neglecting people in Los Angeles either.  On Sunday, September 12th, there's an Evening of Spirit Communication at The Bodhi Tree.  Private in person sessions in LA and appointments by phone are also available in September.

As I sit here writing to you, I've become aware of how quiet it is around me.   Quiet doesn't usually spontaneous occur in my life; that's why it is worth mentioning.  My life buzzes with activity all the time and I'm usually talking with someone - - either on the phone or in spirit.  Or I'm running through the "to do" list that hangs in my head.  Or the hum of Los Angeles thrums like the lowest note on a bass guitar.  Therefore, quiet is startling to me when it happens and . . . precious.

The reason that quiet is so precious is because it is in the quiet that Spirit speaks loudest and eternity can be heard.  I love silence because the temporal falls away giving a glimpse of the eternal.
And now as suddenly as it came, the magical quiet is gone.  I hear a train in the distance, a plane flying overhead, a cat eating kibble in the kitchen and a motorcycle revving up in the parking lot.

This experience serves as a reminder that if we quiet ourselves for a moment each day, we can learn to hear the whispers of Spirit.  Quiet isn't something to take for granted; quiet is a gift to treasure and a challenging boundary to the cares of the world.  As quiet becomes a valued commodity, it naturally follows that loved ones in spirit will have an easier time making themselves known.

Please read this month's article to learn even more about how to know when those you love are saying, "Hi."

During even the busiest of days, may a moment of quiet bring you a moment with Spirit,

Recognizing Signs from Spirit by Hollister Rand

Spirit StonePaula submitted the following question to my Facebook page:  How can I be sure that a sign is not just a coincidence?  Or a thought/feeling is not projection or wishful thinking?  Sometimes my gut says it's real, but then the brain kicks in and questions everything or excuses it away.

I'm asked this question often because more and more people are experiencing direct communications from their loved ones in spirit.  During private sessions the spirits will sometimes confirm some of the ways that they're saying "hello."

For instance, a young woman named Lois smelled cinnamon bread when she walked into her kitchen in the morning.  The odor persisted for about a week and Lois tried everything to discover the source of the smell which although not unpleasant, was puzzling.  She even cleaned out the cupboards and the refrigerator.  During a session that Lois scheduled with me, an Aunt Grace came for a visit and claimed responsibility.  (Cinnamon bread was her specialty.)  The reason that Aunt Grace was making regular appearances was that Lois, who was raised by her, was pregnant with her first child, and was considering Grace for her child's name.  When the young woman told her sister about this message, her sister responded with, "I've been smelling cinnamon, too.  Like everywhere I go, it's a big Cinnabon factory.  I thought it was my imagination."

It is easy to dismiss one or two instances as coincidence or "wishful thinking."  But as this story illustrates, loved ones in spirit will often repeat the communication until we can no longer ignore it.

Often a loved one will relate in a way which was familiar in life.  I call this a "signature."  For example, if your father loved Frank Sinatra and home improvement, you may hear "Mack the Knife" on the radio as you're driving to Home Depot to buy supplies for a project.  Other signatures can include a favorite perfume or cologne, cigarette or cigar smoke, or in the case of a young man in spirit, the colors of his favorite football team would show up in creative ways (like the colors of houses on a family trip) when he wanted to say, "Hi."

Another indication that a sign from a spirit is not merely coincidence is that other people corroborate your experience with their own.  Now, of course, there are those around you who will not support your connection to spirit.  However, as mentioned in the story above, two sisters smelled cinnamon and were unaware that it was a shared experience.  Two people smelling cinnamon repeatedly in different locations during the same period of time is far more than just coincidence.

Another way to know that a sign is a communication from spirit and not just your imagination is that a loved one in spirit may inspire a stranger to be part of the communication.  For example, a friend is relocating her mother from New York to Los Angeles following the death of her father.  As her father was dying, he expressed great concern about his wife living alone after his death.  My friend assured her father that she would make arrangements for her mother to join her in Los Angeles.  Eight months after her father's passing, my friend started the house hunting process.  Her realtor called her and said, "I know that this house isn't in the area you requested, but for some reason, I think that I need to show it to you."  Imagine her surprise when the house was not only perfect for she and her mother to share, but it was located on a street with her sister's name (Evelyn).  To top it off, the first three numbers of the address are the month and day of her sister's birth.  Needless to say, my friend moved into the house and her mother is moving to Los Angeles shortly.

What I find most interesting about this story is that my friend's sister, Evelyn, is staying in New York with her husband and children and she and her mother will miss each other terribly.  However, this loving father in spirit made sure that his daughter will remain a very tangible part of his wife's new life in California.  I just love the way that spirits work!

Repetition, corroboration, spirit signature, and a preponderance of highly unlikely "coincidences" are often the ways that we are assured that loved ones in spirit remain present in our lives.
