Dear Friends,
For those of you who have attended my small spirit circles, the experience is similar to that of an old fashioned sance (without the turban and crystal ball, of course). The word "sance" comes from the French word for "seat," "session" or "sitting," which is derived from the Old French word, "seoir," which means "to sit." I refer to private appointments as sessions or sittings in honor of the long tradition of spirit communication. However, all of this "sitting" (and no exercise) has resulted in my "medium's middle," an expansive reminder of wonderful meals I've shared around the world. Now it is time to keep the memories - - but lose the middle. As I'm exercising and eating healthy (tofu really is hard to love), my thoughts turn to food. More specifically, I think about food on the other side. Do spirits eat? Do we have to worry about our weight in heaven? Get the answers to these and other questions about eternal cuisine in the article "Heavenly Food." In late August I head for the land of buffets, Las Vegas. This trip is bound to test the limits of self discipline. While there I'll be doing a small spirit circle and private sessions. In September the work brings me to San Diego and in October, several events (including a mediumship development workshop) are on the calendar for the Los Angeles area. I'd like to sit and write a while longer, but I've got to go for a swim and then grill a tofu burger. Yours with warm thoughts of a home cooked meal, Hollister Rand

Heavenly Food
Yesterday during a session, I said to a young woman, "Your mother is giving me the impression that she stood with you at the stove last night while you making one of her recipes. "Your mother says not to be afraid to season well. You weren't making soup, were you?" (It was close to 90 degrees out, so soup seemed like a ridiculous idea!) Yes, this young woman had made soup - - and, yes, she was cooking with her mother's recipes. She also confirmed that her mother always cajoled her into seasoning. It seems as though some things never change. The mother, who had died from ovarian cancer, showed enthusiasm for her daughter's new endeavor as a nutritionist helping those with cancer support their systems during treatment and recovery. Food. In nearly every session, there is talk about food. But why do spirits care about food? If you think about it, food doesn't just nourish our bodies. The majority of us in the U.S. don't eat merely for physical survival. Food is a major concern in this life whether there is too much of it . . . or too little. Much of our time is spent talking about food, preparing food, and working so we can buy food. What would a birthday celebration be without a cake? Or holy days without matzoh, wafers and wine? When a son in spirit asked his mother to bake his favorite cake for an upcoming birthday (German chocolate, by the way), it wasn't because he needed the calories in spirit. This expression of his mother's love and his appreciation for it, reminds her that although he isn't there to eat the cake, his life continues and he can join in the celebration. When a great uncle who died of starvation in a concentration camp talks about heaven having tables laden with food, he's speaking of an abundance found in spirit which wasn't found on earth. When a mother in spirit tells her son that she's preparing Thanksgiving dinner for all the newcomers to heaven, she's demonstrating the welcoming nature for which she was known here on earth. (Her son confirmed that at Thanksgiving, his mother always invited people who had no family or were new to the neighborhood.) When a young woman, who passed with complications due to anorexia, talks about enjoying food and seeing herself as she really is, her parents know that she is healed of her affliction. Yesterday I mentioned to a wonderful (and extremely fit) young actor that I was writing about spirits and food. He immediately asked, "Do they talk about vegan vs. meat? Or give advice about healthy diets?" Yes, they do! Those in spirit notice when their loved ones here on earth are making dietary changes. Mothers on the other side have commented on food choices required to deal with high blood pressure and diabetes. A father once said to a son, "Time to cut back on the barbecuing so that you can drop your cholesterol." Food can't be separated from our family history, our relationships with family and friends, and celebrations of significant events. (A young man who passed 3 weeks after his wedding described the cake in mouthwatering detail.) So when those we love in spirit talk about food, they're remembering those special occasions, and expressing their particular likes and dislikes which identify them as clearly as fingerprints. I spoke with a father in spirit who reminded his son of a particular ice cream vendor (by name) in a town (he also gave me the name) where they would go on Sundays to get pistachio ice cream and hot fudge. This memory was so distinct and specific that the son had no doubt that he was speaking with his father. Do spirits eat? Is there food in heaven? Spirits don't have physical bodies requiring the nourishment. And yet, even though food doesn't exist in heaven as it does here, the thought of enjoying it, is very real in the spirit world. One young woman in spirit, obsessed about watching her weight in the physical, told me, "I can eat whatever I want here!" Everyone has their own idea of heaven. Mine will be full of ice cream, lollipops and candy - - Belgium chocolate, in particular. When spirits talk about food, it isn't because they need it. It is because food is about family. Food is about memories. And most of all, food is an expression of love, on this side and the other side of life. The Pillsbury Dough Boy said it best, "Nothin' says lovin' like somethin' from the oven."
