Cold Weather Ahead
Time to prepare.
It is in the mid-80's today in Channelview and it is time for you to return to the boat from time off.
A regular crew change? Maybe, but will you be prepared if your tow is sent up North during the next few days or weeks. The low temperatures forecast from Baton Rouge and looking north are presently in the low 50's. A couple of more weeks and we could see temperatures in the 40's and 30's.
Do you have the right clothing packed for the next 20 days?
For boats working or expecting to work the Northern areas, here are a few ideas to get your boat's cold weather operation ready:
Do you have several approved space heaters aboard that will be used if extreme temperatures are encountered? Have they been recently tested?
Do you have one or two approved dehumidifiers onboard to deal with interior moisture build-up? With the boat closed up during very cold days, high inside humidity build-up can make the interior clammy and uncomfortable. Have they been tested for this season?
Have you ordered enough de-icer to keep decks ice and snow free. Do you have a snow shovel?
Are there floor mats positioned inside the doorways so snow and ice are not tracked inside the house. Slipping hazards abound in freezing weather.
Have you checked the antifreeze levels on your barge pump engines? Are the concentrations high enough for the anticipated temperature extremes? Does the boat have enough of the proper antifreeze on board for make-up? Do you know where your antifreeze concentration tester is?

Winter scene on the M/V BAFFIN BAY tow | Here are some operational checks that we have published before:
Towboat - Deck Preparations
- Drain on deck fire main and fresh water pipe lines, valves, etc. that are outside of the accommodations and engine room.
- If snow is expected, have shovels and de-icier ready to keep decks ice/snow free. Have you ordered enough de-icier?
- Drop mooring/head lines into the forward hold with the ends hung inside the entrance. Frozen lines are difficult to handle. Keep them dry and ready to use.
- Be prepared to secure air to the whistle during operations. Ice crystals can form in the air whistle's actuation valve and prevent it from closing.
Towboat - Machinery, Engine Room Preparations
- Keep engine room doors closed and secured.
- Adjust the number of ventilating fans operating in the engine room. Secure all fans during extreme low temperature conditions.
- When moored, during extreme cold, start up and idle main engines on a regular schedule to keep engine oil warm. Use your judgment on how often to run.
- When moored, during extreme cold, start up and swing the rudders on a regular basis to circulate hydraulic fluid and to keep ice from forming around the rudders.
- Check antifreeze levels in your main and generator engines for the proper concentration.
- Keep air reservoirs well drained of condensation to prevent ice crystal build up inside deck air lines.
Barge - Deck Preparations
- Keep working lines dry and out of weather when not in use.
- Clear deck of snow/ice. Spread de-icier as needed.
- Drain water from barge fuel tank before freezing conditions begin.
- Make sure antifreeze levels are correct in pump/auxiliary engines.
Crew Protection
- Crew should be well equipped with proper cold weather clothing.
- Crew work should be planned such that they are less exposed to cold weather and allowed to warm up on a regular basis.
- Heating in accommodation should be checked for satisfactory working. Are space heaters operational?
- All personnel shall be instructed in hazards of working in freezing conditions and be aware of the possibility of slipping.
If you have other suggestions for operating in cold weather this season, let us know! |
Synthetic Marijuana

Now listed as a "Prohibited Substance".
Synthetic Cannabis, also known as "Fake Pot", is a psychoactive designer drug made of natural herbs sprayed with chemicals, known as cannabinoids. Cannabinoids sprayed on the herbs are claimed to mimic THC, the active ingredients in cannabis. Some production names include: K2, Spice, Mr. Nice Guy, Barely Legal, Piece of Mind, XXX. Many stores sell the synthetic marijuana as "herbal incense" though some state plainly on the package "not for human consumption".
Higman Marine has added synthetic cannabis as a prohibited substance to our zero tolerance policy. Effective immediately Company drug screening will include synthetic cannabis.
There have been very few studies on the effects that fake pot can have on your body. Professor John W. Huffman who synthesized many of the cannabinoid is quoted as saying "People who use it are idiots." and "You don't know what it's going to do to you." |
Engine Room Wash Down Caution
Water and electrical powered control systems do not mix!
Use caution when working in the engine room with a water hose. A direct water spray on the steering pumps can knock the system out by tripping the supply breakers. The steering directional valves send hydraulic pressure to the rams. They are opened and closed by solenoid valves that are actuated by relays. Though the relays are "water resistant", they are not "water proof".
A direct spray from the water hose on the relay actuated solenoid valves can overcome the water resistance and penetrate into the operating coils. Water will conduct across the terminals creating a short circuit. The short circuit will cause a heavy current surge which will trip the breakers.
Keep the water hose away! |
Are You Protected Against the Flu?

Flu Shot time.
The CDC recommends that everyone over the age of 6 months receive a yearly flu vaccination. Flu season usually begins in October and lasts through May. It is recommended to get the vaccination as early as possible.
You hear some excuses as to why people don't get the flu shot:
- "It will give me the flu". Flu shots cannot give you the flu. The viruses in the vaccination are inactive (killed).
- "I'm a healthy. I'm not young, sick, or old". Healthy adults can get the flu too. The vaccination will also help prevent the spread of the virus to those around you (children or elderly).
- "I don't like needles". If you do not like big needles they now offer the Fluzone Intradermal. The Intradermal version has a much smaller needle that is injected into the skin not into the muscle. This is for adults 18-64.
Flu shots are now available at most pharmacies and your doctor's office. The cost is $20 to $40 per shot. This cost is well worth not having the achy muscles, headaches, fever, chills, and severe fatigue that are commonly associated with the flu.
I got my shot last week while I was doing my physical. We want to see how many of our boats get them this year. Email me when you get your flu shot! |

Crazy Mouse Syndrome
|
Keyspan Serial/USB convertor |
Every once and awhile Windows reads GPS data and thinks it is "mouse input" and results in erratic mouse movement. This condition is occasionally encountered in Microsoft Windows 7 when connecting a serial GPS device to a serial port/USB convertor.
The following steps will cure the "crazy mouse" syndrome :
- Shut down the computer.
- Unplug the Keyspan USB/Serial converter from computer by pulling USB plug from the back of the Rose Point Keyboaord computer.
- Restart computer and plug back the the USB/Serial converter.
This should fix the problem.
Properties Panel
The Properties panel, located on the upper right hand side of your screen can be used to describe details of about anything found on the chart.
While using Vector Charts (raster charts do no have the detail):
- Click on "Properties"
- Click on "Chart" to get chart details
- Click on "Object" to get to get details on docks, moorings, pipline crossings, etc.

iNav Zone- MMSI Number
Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) is a 9 digit number used to identify your vessel using DSC on your VHF radio. Digital Selective Calling system is a standard for sending digital messages. For offshore vessels DSC is part of the GMDSS (Global Marine Distress Safety System).
DSC signals use a stable signal with a narrow bandwidth and the receiver has no squelch. This all provides for a 25% longer range than analog channels.
The DSC system is designed for distress calls. When a distress call is made the DSC will automatically send the MMSI number (identifying your vessel). These bands can transmit radiotelephony and radiotelex messages if needed. When the signal is sent it can wait up to four minutes for a coast stations reply. If there is no reply it will automatically repeat the distress alert up to five times.
If it is hooked into the GPS it will also send the time and the coordinate of the distress.
If you program the MMSI number into the VHF, you will receive an alarm every 4 hours if the GPS is not connected to the VHF.

Nautical Trivia
The Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal
For the past several years, Higman tows have traveled form the Gulf Coast to just North of Lockport, IL on the Illinois River. That section of the waterway was completed in 1900 and is known as the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal.
The Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, historically known as the Chicago Drainage Canal, is the only shipping link between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River system, by way of the Illinois and Des Plaines Rivers. The canal also carries Chicago's treated sewage into the Des Plaines River. Before completion of the canal, the sewage in the Chicago River flowed into Lake Michigan, the city's drinking water supply.
Early Chicago sewage systems discharged directly into Lake Michigan or into the Chicago River, which itself flowed into the lake. The city's water supply also came from the lake, through water intake cribs located two miles offshore. There were fears that sewage could infiltrate the water supply, leading to typhoid fever, cholera and dysentery. During a tremendous storm in 1885, the rainfall washed refuse from the river far out into the lake (although reports of a 1885 cholera epidemic are untrue), spurring a panic that a future similar storm would cause a huge epidemic in Chicago. The only reason for the storm not causing such a catastrophic event was because the weather was cooler than normal. The Chicago Sanitary District was created by the Illinois legislature in 1889 in response to this close call.

The JULIET was the first vessel to travel the new waterway on
Jan 20, 1900. |
In addition, the canal was built to supplement and ultimately replace the older and smaller Illinois and Michigan Canal (built 1848) as a conduit to the Mississippi River system. In 1871, the old canal had been deepened in an attempt to reverse the river and improve shipping but the reversal of the river only lasted one season. The I&M canal was also badly polluted as a result of unrestricted dumping from city sewers and industries, such as the stockyards.
