FURUNO 1954-BB and 1964-BB Radar Maintenance

Radar Optimization
Furuno recommends "Optimizing" the FURUNO 1954 BB and 1964 BB radars every 1500 to 2000 hours or about every 2 months.  When targets begin to degrade or if the magnetron starts to drift one way or the other, "optimization" can return a better picture.  You cannot "Optimize" too much as the it re-tunes the receiver to the optimum frequency and corrects the video.  "Optimizing will also extend the life of the Magnatron.

To Optimize 1954/1964 BB radars:
  • Hold down the "MENU" button and quickly push the "PWR TX" button. Installation Mode - FURUNO 1954/1964 BB
  • Continue holding "MENU" down until the opening boat picture come up on screen. Release "MENU" button
  • "SELECT MODE" screen will come up.  Select "INST. MODE" and press enter.
  • Processor will boot up in Installation Mode.  Press"DISP". Select "Radar".  Allow radar to warm up and go to "STBY" mode.
  • Press "PWR TX"...
  • Press soft key "D" to transmit
  • Press "MENU"...select  "E  SYSTEM CONFIGURATION"
  • Select  "D  INSTALLATION SETUP"
  • Select "B  RADAR SETUP"
  • Scroll with knob to "RADAR OPTIMIZATION"...press "ENTER"
  • Select "on"...press "ENTER" again
The radar then optimizes itself.  No other action needed.  An Email notice will be sent out on the first Monday of every other month reminding those with the 1954/1964 series radars to "Optimize" along with instructions.

If the cursor skips or moves abnormally, you may need to clean the Trackball.
1. Turn the retainer ring counterclockwise 45° to unlock it.
2. Remove the retainer ring and ball.
3. Clean the ball with a soft
lint-free cloth, and then blow carefully into the ball-cage to dislodge dust and lint.
4. Look for a build-up of dirt on the metal rollers. If dirty, clean the rollers using a cotton swab moistened lightly with isopropyl-rubbing alcohol.
5. Make sure that fluff from the swab is not left on the rollers.
6. Replace the ball and retainer ring. Be sure the retainer ring is not inserted reversely.

CAPT Mike Maneely offered the following from Mark Twain's "Life on the Mississippi" written in 1883.

"Life on the Mississippi" is a memoir by Mark Twain detailing his days as a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River before the American Civil War and sounds as familiar today as it did in Twain's time:

"The growth of courage in the pilot-house is steady all the time, but it does not reach a high and satisfactory condition until some time after the young pilot has been "standing his own watch" alone and under the staggering weight of all the responsibilities connected with the position. When the apprentice has become pretty thoroughly acquainted with the river, he goes clattering along so fearlessly with his steamboat, night or day, that he presently begins to imagine that it is his courage that animates him; but the first time the pilot steps out and leaves him to his own devices he finds out it was the other man's. He discovers that the article has been left out of his own cargo altogether. The whole river is bristling with exigencies in a moment; he is not prepared for them; he does not know how to meet them; all his knowledge forsakes him; and within fifteen minutes he is as white as a sheet and scared almost to death. Therefore pilots wisely train these cubs by various strategic tricks to look danger in the face a little more calmly."
