Winter on Lake Michigan HTCO 3009, HTCO 3010
The barges from the M/V ARUNDEL cross icy open waters of Lake Michigan last week en-route to Whiting, Indiana. The M/V LISA E was contracted to bring the barges from Chicago to the BP dock at Whiting.
M/V ARUNDEL waited for her barges to return in the Chicago area and saw its share of ice and snow! |
TWIC UPDATE Deck Enrollments to Begin
Wheelmen enrollments began in late December and the majority have enrolled or are presently pre-enrolled. Letters will be sent out in the next two weeks from the office to all DECK crew with instructions on how to apply for a TWIC.
Once enrolled, the process takes four weeks and longer to receive notification that your card is ready for pickup. As the September deadline gets closer, wait times to receive a TWIC are bound to grow.
Once you receive your TWIC, please remember to let your crew change office know so a copy may be placed in your file.

Higman History
90 plus years in the Towing Business
Higman's roots go back to 1917 when an Orange, Texas pharmacist, J. W. Higman, and a partner Louis Smaihall, formed Higman Towing Company to move logs on the Sabine River to an Orange lumber mill, and water to various Louisiana locations. The firm started with two small tugs and three barges. As the demand for the movement of crude oil and petroleum products grew, that of logs and water waned, and the company shifted its focus accordingly.
In 1953, Higman bought 3 boats and 10 barges, the entire marine fleet of the former Pan American Refining Company. Throughout the 1960's - 1990's Higman continuously kept modernizing its fleet, adding new boats and barges. In 1997, Higman acquired Maryland Marine Inc., which expanded the fleet by 40 percent. In recent years, the firm has continued building boats and barges, increasing both horsepower and barge capacity.

Each day is an opportunity to strive for excellence whether we are on the boat or at home. Vincent Lombardi once said "The quality of a person's life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor."
Sounds like good advice to me.
