New Wheelman Orientation Policy

All Policy and Procedure holders will soon receive a new Section 6 of the manual making changes to Part A, Hiring Procedure; part 4 New Pilots.  This section is now titled "New Wheelman" and describes the procedure for their orientation.  The emphasis on this orientation is on the day to day vessel operations that are unique here at Higman.  Record keeping, incident reporting, specific dock operations are some of the topics that must be reviewed.

New Wheelmen will ride as "third watchmen" for a period designated by the Port Captains to assess their experience and abilities.  Each new Wheelman will have a "New Wheelman Orientation and Posting Record" booklet with him that will contain an assessment check sheet for the Captain or Relief Captain to fill out.    The Assessment Record is to be filled out by the Captain or Relief Captain and returned to the office.

If you have any questions on this new procedure, please talk to your Port Captain.

This year the MMI Wheelman's Seminar will be held at Cypress Bend Resort.  Located on Toledo Bend Reservoir at Many, LA, Cypress Bend offers a great location for our discussions and gives our Wheelmen and Steersmen a chance to interact and share ideas.  Meeting dates are:

March 18 - March19

April 1 - April 2

April 15 - April 16

All Wheelmen will soon receive a letter requesting their reservation.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Performance Evaluations

An important part of crew development is Performance Evaluations.  Done properly, a Performance Evaluation can positively motivate an employee and help direct him in the right direction for a successful career.  It is also important for documenting promotions, discipline and assisting in future manning decisions.

The Captain may designate his Relief Captain, Pilot or Tankerman to conduct Performance Evaluations of those under them.  Company policy requires Performance Evaluations to be done at least once a year and sent to the office by JUNE 30th.

Performance Evaluations are also needed for Promotions and Transfers.  A good evaluation for a job well done is a very powerful motivator and is well worth the effort.
