The Emerging Spectrum Landscape for Broadcast And Mobile At IBC
|
|
DigiTAG is hosting a "must attend" session at 16:00 on Monday 10 September 2012 at the IBC Conference in Amsterdam that will address the issues of The Emerging Spectrum Landscape for Broadcast and Mobile.
At the World Radio Conference (WRC) meeting earlier this year, the European Commission appeared intent on forcing broadcasters to free up another 200MHz of spectrum for mobile operators in addition to the 1GHz already available, as part of an emerging policy.
So what really happened at the WRC and what are the exact proposals being tabled? Can the mobile and broadcast industries arbitrate with national regulators to find new approaches for better spectrum management and what are the possibilities for co-ordinated EU-action within the wider context of the ITU?
The session will address a key strategic issue affecting the future of the broadcast industry. It will provide a window into the spectrum plans of the EC, as well as a succinct view of how global harmonization plans may affect the European landscape in the area
The session will provide a definitive view on how global spectrum harmonization may impact European players and learn the plans of the European Commission and of the Digital Terrestrial Television industry's response. Discover how the latest compression technologies may bring about desired convergence and discuss with those influencing the critical decisions whether broadcasters can grow let alone cope with greater spectral efficiency and less bandwidth.
If you are attending IBC make sure you attend to hear the very latest updates in this critical area.

News From The 71st Meeting Of the Steering Board
|
|
At the 71st meeting of the DVB Steering Board, approval was given for an update of the DVB-S2 standard for use with wideband transponders. The update will allow efficient use of wideband transponders which are now becoming available. In addition, the Steering Board agreed that DVB will start working on DVB-S2 extensions supporting the more efficient use of satellite transponders. DVB-S2 will continue to be the standard for direct-to-home satellite services whereas these updates will benefit the specification by optimizing it for contribution and other high-speed data rate services. The extensions take advantage of technical solutions that are available for implementing.
A new version of the DVB-S2 BlueBook as well as the corresponding ETSI European Norm (EN 302 307) is to be published to include the new time slicing technology for wideband transponders.
Phase 2a of the DVB-3DTV specification was also approved by the Steering Board. The Phase 2a system, also known as "Service Compatible Mode" is designed to meet the needs of those who need to provide normal HDTV receivers with a 2D version of the 3D program from the same broadcast channel, and at the same time improve the quality of the 3DTV images. Phase 2a provides a 2D version plus an MPEG MVC top-up signal. Although they are tailored to their different environments, both 3D Blu-ray and Phase 2a use MVC, which will enable receivers to include both capabilities. The specification has been submitted to ETSI for formal standardization and an amended DVB-3DTV BlueBook has been published to reflect the addition to the specification.
