DigiTAG: Very Successful Workshop On The Expansion Of DVB-T2 In Europe

The word is out that the 2012 Vienna DigiTAG Workshop (8 & 9 May) rates amongst the best ever! The event, organised by the DigiTAG New Market Development Task Force led by Andreas Schumann (Panasonic), is the latest in a series of five Workshops over the last three years which have travelled from Warsaw, via Budapest, Bucharest, and Moscow, to Vienna. The focus of each event has been to spread knowledge and experience from the early DVB markets to the late adopters in the farther reaches of Europe. The Workshop format is ideal for this, being structured around a number of expert presentations but with interactive panel discussions and Q & A sessions, plus the occasional networking opportunity.

The Workshop was generously and brilliantly hosted by ORS, the Austrian Broadcast Network Operator, whose Managing Director Michael Wagenhofer welcomed the 85 delegates representing 28 countries from Europe and the CIS. The expansion of DVB-T2 was covered by bringing together presentations and discussions on three groups of countries: those which successfully introduced DVB-T many years ago and have already introduced DVB-T2 alongside this; those with fairly mature DVB-T markets which have plans to test and introduce DVB-T2;, and those which have yet to carry out the digital switchover and which are keen to take advantage of the benefits of launching with DVB-T2 from the start.

The audience was also treated to a Keynote from Professor Ulrich Reimers (Technical University of Braunschweig and Chairman of the DVB-TM) on 'DVB-T2 solutions for portable and mobile reception' and presentations on some of the other hot topics of the terrestrial TV world including Frequency Spectrum and the Digital Dividend, Connected TV/Hybrid Broadcast Broadband, Conformance Testing for the horizontal TV marketplace, and PayTV solutions.

The results of the Workshop are the subject of the May 2012 DigiTAG Webletter, and if you're not already a subscriber, or would like more information about the Workshop, please take a look at the DigiTAG website www.digitag.org.

DVB-GEM 3DTV Profile Published By ETSI

ETSI Logo

The DVB-GEM (Globally Executable MHP) Profile for Plano-Stereoscopic 3DTV has been recently approved and published by ETSI (TS 101 600 V1.1.1).

The profile specifies the extensions to the DVB-GEM middleware to enable applications that are aware of frame compatible plano-stereoscopic 3DTV services. This is achieved with a new horizontal 3D profile which can be applied to all GEM targets. The 3D profile extends the display model and presentation APIs, to enable additional 3D display modes and drawing functions, with varying capabilities. For the more capable 3D modes a new drawing API is introduced, which is a stereoscopic extension of the java.awt.Graphics2D API set.

On devices with hardware support for accelerated 3D graphics based on OpenGL ES, the profile specifies an additional 3D mode, which enables the rendering of a 3D volumetric scene to a stereoscopic display. On these devices Open GL ES based drawing is also available for 2D display modes.

A plano-stereoscopic system creates a 3D illusion for the viewer by delivering two images (left and right) that are seen simultaneously by the left and right eyes. This can be achieved by various techniques on a TV set, such as shutter glasses, polarizer glasses and others.

Since 2010 many 3D-enabled consumer products have appeared on the market starting with Blu-ray players and TV sets. DVB has taken into account the need to support planoscopic 3DTV for broadcast services and developed a specification to define the delivery system for plano-stereoscopic 3DTV services that are compatible with 3DTV capable displays that are already available in the market.

GEM based TV middleware specifications are adopted in different markets. The present document specifies an extension to the DVB-GEM middleware with a new horizontal 3D profile. This 3D GEM profile ensures that interactive applications and graphics are aware of 3D content and can handle drawing situations, where the application graphics are superimposed to 3D movie content.

The specification can be downloaded here.

Thailand Confirms DVB-T2 Choice

Thailand's NBTC

Thailand's government has announced that its digital TV services are to begin launching this year. The announcement was made in Bangkok on the 24th of May by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) and confirmed the selection of DVB-T2 as the standard for Thailand's digital television broadcasting.

As part of the country's "Go Digital Thailand" project, the government approved the NBTC's proposal to use DVB-T2 as the system for digital TV broadcasting in Thailand on the 20th of May 2012. The
NBTC said its decision will also promote cooperation with other ASEAN partners, which agreed to endorse DVB-T2 as the ASEAN common digital terrestrial broadcasting standard. NBTC member Colonel Natee Sukonrat said "DVB-T2 is a European-based modern digital TV system with the best transmission efficiency. It is currently used in countries worldwide, including those in Europe and the ASEAN region". He went on to say "The technology standard was chosen because it could accommodate future technology development and it could maximise the use of spectrum to yield a greater number of TV channels".

Colonel Natee confirmed that the NBTC would make sure that the digital TV project would not affect or cause difficulties for viewers. All existing TV channels, now broadcasted via the analog system will be gradually transferred to the digital system
starting this year with a completion target in 2016. There will be about 50 terrestrial digital TV channels, all using ultra-high frequency (UHF).

It has been reported that the spectrum bidding is expected to take place next year and that the NBTC broadcasting committee will join with free-to-air TV operators to test the service.

The commission intends to make available the first three of its four classes of licences for terrestrial digital TV this year. The three licence types are for programme transmission, for rental of facilities such as broadcast towers, and for channel operators. The fourth class, for providers of application services, will be awarded later.

Don't Miss Us At BroadcastAsia

BroadcastAsia 2012 Logo

At the upcoming BroadcastAsia (Stand 4S4-06), DVB will host a combined DVB-T2 and T2-Lite demonstration that underlines the robustness and flexibility of the DVB-T2 standard, now the world's fastest growing DTT standard. DVB-T2-Lite is a new feature of DVB-T2 that pares down DVB-T2 parameter settings to what is required for mobile and portable reception. The result is a very efficient mode that enables the complexity of the receiver chips to be reduced by 50 percent, which in turn reduces receiver costs. The demo consists of a DVB-T2 stream received on a Sony DVB-T2 iDTV and a T2-Lite demo with a Sony evaluation board which in turn displays the T2-Lite stream on a laptop.

A separate demonstration of the second generation cable standard, DVB-C2, will highlight the growing number of manufacturers that are supporting the new standard with the development of products. Visitors to the stand can see first-hand a DVB-C2 ready Sony iDTV, a Sony DVB-C2 evaluation board and a prototype DVB-C2 Humax set-top box.

BroadcastAsia is particularly relevant this year as more and more Asia-Pacific region countries opt for DVB-T2. These now include Brunei, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, New Zealand, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam.

DVB experts will also be participating in the official conference program in the conference session 'DVB-T2 Technologies - The Road Ahead'.

The full conference program is availabe on the BroadcastAsia website.

Portugal Successfully Completes ASO

ASO

Portugal's telecommunications sector regulator, Anacom, has announced that the country successfully completed its analogue switch-off on 26 April. This was the third and final phase of the process, which began in January of this year and included the last fifteen analogue transmitters, taking in those at Monte da Virgem,  Marao, Montejunto and Lousa.

The digital service includes the four main Portuguese broadcasters, RTP 1 (Radio e Televisão de Portugal) and RTP 2, and commercial channels SIC (Sociedade Independente de Comunicação) and TVI (Televisão Independente).

A recent survey conducted by the communications regulator revealed that 64% of respondents noted the improved image resolution compared with analogue television. Audio quality was considered improved by 41% of respondents while 51% consider audio quality to be equal to that of analogue television.

Whilst most households have successfully made the migration to digital, the government confirmed an extension of the deadline for the application of subsidies to use towards the purchase of digital receivers. Eligible households can now apply for aid until 31 August 2012.
