Singapore Confirms Commitment to DVB-T2

In his opening address to the delegates at BroadcastAsia 2011, on the 21June, Singapore's Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, Dr Yaacob Ibrahim stated that the country is on course in its plans to go fully digital. This is in line with ASEAN's committed timeframe to switch off analogue TV transmission between 2015 and 2020.

"Following ASEAN's adoption of the DVB-T standard for Digital Terrestrial Television, Singapore is looking into the early migration to DVB-T2, the second and latest generation of this standard. The move will result in enhanced viewing experiences for consumers and provide them with greater choices in TV content and services.

"MDA (Singapore's Media Development Authority) is now putting in place a nationwide trial network to determine how the new standard can be suitably adopted for the country's terrain. With this network, Singapore will be among the first in the region to establish a wide scale DVB-T2 trial infrastructure. MDA is planning for the trial network to be installed by September 2011," Dr Ibrahim said.

He urged industry players to leverage on the DVB-T2 coverage to test-bed new and innovative content, hardware and services. "I am pleased to note that there is already industry interest to trial innovative use of digital signals for future content and services development over the DVB-T2 infrastructure, which augurs well for our local media industry," Dr Ibrahim continued.

The Philippines Urged To Adopt DVB-T2

Philippines crest A joint delegation of DVB and European Union representatives has visited Manila to meet with The Philippines' National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to present the technical superiority of DVB-T2 over the dated Japanese ISDB-T system. The economic advantages and the benefits of the economies of scale were also put forth. It is hoped that the NTC will reconsider its deadline of 30 June for its final decision on the adoption of a digital standard. The delegation called for a proper DVB-T2 field trial to be held so that a full comparison can be made of the competing standards. Read full press release...

BroadcastAsia 2011 Demonstrates The Future With DVB-T2

BroadcastAsia 2011

This year's BCA conference and tradeshow could not have been better for DVB. It started perfectly with an announcement by Singapore's Minister of Information, Communication and Arts that the country will conduct field trials with T2, which, for sure, will result in a regular service in the future. One important feature of T2 to be tested will be Multiple Physical Layer Pipes (MPLP). This fitted in nicely with the main demonstration at the DVB booth which showed 3 PLPs covering the wide range from HD, 3D high data rate services, down to the robust reception of low data rate mobile services. There were many visitors from all over the region and the main question was: should we start with DVB-T2 now? The answer is, of course, yes. A large variety of DVB-T2 products were demonstrated at the show. Of particular interest were STB manufacturers, with several presenting products with prices as low as 50 USD for a T2, MPEG-4 HD STB. In addition to 8 MHz bandwidth, receivers now also support 6 and 7 MHz bandwidth, as required for the Philippines and Australia respectively.

BCA 2011 clearly demonstrated that the future of terrestrial television is DVB-T2!

Austria Completes ASO & Concentrates On DVB-T2

Austria completed digital switchover of the country's terrestrial television services earlier this month. On June 6, the last 24 transmitter sites in the region around Mariazell and Mürztal switched to DTT. Digital switchover began in 2006 with the launch of DVB-T services and analogue switch-off began in 2007.

With analogue switch-off complete, the Austrian Regulatory Authority (RTR) has decided to introduce DVB-T2, and services could begin in the first half of 2012 and could offer up to 30 new channels.

Dr. Alfred Grinnell, Managing Director of RTR, said the introduction of DVB-T2 is an important development step but assured consumers they can be confident that there will be a long-term parallel operation of both DVB-T and DVB-T2 over several years.

The authorities hope that the roll-out of DVB-T2 will increase the DTT market share from the current around 5% to 12-15% before 2015. DVB-T2 technology provides an improved signal compression, enabling more channels, HDTV and multimedia services to be offered on terrestrial frequencies.

Scotland Completes Move To Digital

ASO Scotland

Scotland has officially become the first fully digital nation in the United Kingdom. Free to air digital TV services are now extended to reach around 98.5% of households across the country. Scotland's switchover was completed on June 22, at the Kirkfieldbank transmitter near Lanark, when the last transmitter was switched to digital. The switchover is the culmination of a three-year engineering project that has delivered more choice and improved picture quality to hundreds of thousands of viewers across Scotland.

Paul Hughes, Digital UK National Manager for Scotland, said: "This is great news for Scotland - now that switchover is complete, digital TV coverage has been boosted to reach an extra one million viewers, and Scotland has a broadcasting system fit for the 21st century."

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Reimers

At the 88th meeting of the Technical Module in Geneva on the 8 - 9 June, chaired by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Reimers, the following specifications were approved:

1.         Approval of the extension of the DVB-T2 specification "T2-Mobile"

2.         Approval of the DVB-RCS2 Higher Layer Specification (HLS)

3.         Approval of an extension of the DVB Measurement Guidelines

The next steps for the specifications are a review by the DVB's Commercial Module and then to the Steering Board for final approval.

The next meeting of the Technical Module is set for the 28 and 29 September 2011.

Utilizing Multiple PLPs

Physical Layer Pipes (PLP), a mechanism employed by DVB-T2 allows for the configuration of the modulation scheme and FEC independently for different services within a channel. A potential scenario is a high data rate PLP with, for example, 256QAM for reception of HD content by a rooftop antenna combined with a PLP using 16QAM for portable indoor reception. The PLP mechanism supports a wide range of different Quality of Service classes to address different scenarios such as HD, SD, and low resolution services for rooftop antenna, indoor antenna, or mobile reception. Laurent Roul of DVB Member company, Enensys Technologies, explains some of the benefits of using Multiple PLPs in regional content insertion. Read full story...
