It Is, Genealogically, a Small World!

This time of year as we enter fall, with Hallowe'en, then Thanksgiving, on the agenda,  I often think of that brave band of pilgrims that arrived in America aboard the Mayflower in 1620 to begin a democratic experiment
of self-determination in forming their own government thousands of miles from their mother country, a country in which they had been persecuted for their religious beliefs.

They had only their safe passage to be thankful for.  That winter, more than half of them died. Yet the half that survived has left tens of millions of descendants.  If all 16 of your great-grandparents were born in the United States, the odds are good that you descend from at least one of those pioneering pilgrims who founded the Plymouth Colony, or one of the Jamestown colonists.

How connected we all are to one another was yet another time brought home to me when I recently taught two seminars at the introductory level of genealogical research.  These sessions were in Canada's Quebec City, which last year observed its 400th anniversary.

There were four students, none of them Americans.  One student came from England. Another was born in the United States to an American mother and French Canadian father and has spent her adult life in Quebec.  Two others come from generations of Canadians and one of them descends primarily from families of British origin.

It was, once again, astonishing to see the degree to which we are all connected.  In that class, three of us had common Goodenough/Goodenow ancestry in Massachusetts and two of us descend from Deacon Edmund Rice, founder of Sudbury, Massachusetts.  That's not all.  Two of those attending the seminars have barely scratched the surface in their quest for ancestors.

Mary Jean Martin, who has been added to our ezine mailing list, didn't know she had this American ancestry.  Her descent is from those Rices who accompanied Beriah Rice to Nova Scotia aboard the Charming Molly a couple of decades before the American Revolution.

So, welcome aboard Mary Jean!

A KISS FOR OUR WONDERFUL READERS
 X = Kiss

During the Middle Ages, when few people were able to write, many documents were signed with an X.  Signers kissed the letter to affirm their sincerity in the same way they kissed the Bible when taking an oath.  The letter X was the sign of St. Andrew and implied a sacred promise to fulfill one's obligation.

 NAMES TO CHUCKLE OVER

She Cut Her What?

"It seems that Georgiana Cutter and Allen Pratt, both young members of prominent Coldwater, Michigan families, were wed in 1880.  After she died, Mr. Pratt had a very nice bronze plaque placed on the inside wall of the Episcopal Church.  It read: 'In Memory of Georgiana Cutter Pratt.' This, of course, caused many giggles and grins."

(Sent to your editor many years ago by Chuck Woodward of Coldwater, Michigan.)

The Oren D. Rice Family

Oren D. Rice, one of the five children of Solomon Rice Jr. and his wife, the former Ruth Maynard, was born July 9, 1808 in Vermont. Although Oren was already the father of eight children by 1858 when Andrew H. Ward's genealogy of the descendants of Edmund Rice of Sudbury, Massachusetts, was published, Oren is not mentioned in that work and his father, Solomon Rice, receives but a passing mention on page 126, where his Sept. 21, 1777 baptism is noted and it is stated "this Solomon married Ruth Maynard at Sudbury July 18, 1797."

This is a typical story. Oren, his two brothers and two sisters were probably unknown to Ward because their parents had left Massachusetts, moving first to Vermont, then to Delaware County, New York.  As Ward was winding up his book, Oren was settling in Linn County, Iowa.

Oren's sister Ruth married Benjamin Maynard; his sister Susan wed Benjamin F. Whitcomb. Oren's older brother James (1804-1878) became the husband of Benjamin Maynard's sister, Mary, and had seven children. His younger brother, Alvin H. Rice (1810-1869), married Sally Faulkner, sired 12 children--10 of them boys--and died in 1869 at Little Marsh, Tioga Co., Pennsylvania.

Oren was still a boy when his parents moved from Vermont to Delaware Co., New York. He grew up, married Elizabeth Garrison (1814-1865), and moved to Linn Co., Iowa, in 1857. Oren appears on the 1870 census of Spencer Twp. in Clay Co., Iowa, in the home of his son, John S. Rice.  He died July 16, 1872.

The children of Oren D. and Elizabeth (Garrison) Rice were:

1. ADELIA MARIA RICE (1834-1928); married Rufus Crane and lived near Spencer and Ruthven, Iowa.
2. JABEZ JUDSON RICE (1836-19310; see story below.
3. JOHN SHERMAN RICE (1838-1937) married Laura E. Melendy of Spencer Co., Iowa, and settled in Greenwood Co., Kansas. Children: Ernest G., Edna E. (m. Leaman L. Miller), Sally T. (d. age 20, unmarried), Myrtle (m. Thomas D. Broddle), Jacob A., William
H., and Blanche M, who m. 1) Alex Blakely and 2) Patrick Cunningham.
4. RUBEN RICE, reported to have died at age 13.
5. SELPHINA E. RICE (1843-1912) who married Henry Fink, lived in Iowa and had 12 children.
6. ALVIN L. RICE, born in 1846, was a blacksmith at Lake City, Iowa, in 1900; he had a son, Clyde.
7. ADELBERT RUFUS RICE (1848-1944) married Harriet
E. Erwin and settled in Greenwood Co., Kansas. Children: Clara M. (m. Leonidus Bate),b Clyde B., , Nellie L. (m. Charles E. Bate) and Ralph B. Rice.
8. SALLY RICE (1853-1864) is said to have died of diphtheria.

The Family of Jabez Judson Rice

Jabez Judson Rice, the oldest son of Oren D. and Elizabeth (Garrison) Rice, was born Aug. 7, 1836 in Delaware Co., New York, and was 21 when he accompanied his family on the tedious overland trek to their new home in Linn County, Iowa.

The Rices settled somewhere near Jordan's Grove in the Central City region and young Jabez became acquainted with the Lemuel Jordan family. Lemuel had left his native Maine for the South, but not liking it there had looked to the "wild west" and, in 1840, became one of the earliest settlers of Linn Co., Iowa. He returned to Maine in 1843 to wed Mary Nancy McKinney and bring his bride to the Iowa wilderness.
 Jabez and wife
Jabez Rice married, on Jan. 1, 1863, Lemuel and Nancy's daughter, Sarah Dyer Jordan (1844-1888).  About five years later they moved to the rural area near the town of Spencer in Clay Co., Iowa.  In 1878, when their eldest son was 15, Jabez and Sarah packed their belongings into a covered wagon and, with their son walking alongside most of the way to drive the cattle, struck out for Kansas to homestead in Greenwood Co. on a farm near the community of Climax.

Jabez and Sarah reared a family of six children on their farm. Tragedy first struck the family in 1878 when their 10-year-old-daughter Nellie died. She was buried at Twin Grove Cemetery, Severy, Kansas, where her parents and other family members were later laid to rest.

Sarah became ill when in her mid 40s and, following a year of sickness, died Sept. 3, 1888 on the homestead east of Climax, leaving five children, the youngest only 8 years old.

Jabez Rice farmed all his life and, in his declining years, lived with his son Ervin, who took over the home farm. Jabez died March 20, 1931 at age 94.

Children of Jabez J. and Sarah D. (Jordan) Rice.

Frank married Ella Ferguson in 1903 and they had one child, Nancy Rice, born in 1905. Nancy, an artist, married Elgin Lee Hicks in 1926. They had a son, Frank Hicks, and in 1976 were living in Ponca City, Oklahoma.

His daughter Caroline was born and died in 1947 and the second child, Billie Joe, was born and died in 1956. Royal Judson Rice's only surviving child is Larrie Dean Rice, born Nov. 16, 1961 at Stillwater, Oklahoma. Larrie is the only male great-grandson of Jabez Judson Rice left to perpetuate the Rice surname in this branch of the family.

The Arba Rice Family of Readsboro, VT & Cheshire, CT

This information was sent to your editor by A. Franklin Rice of Manchester, New Hampshire in the 1980s.  It was given to him by his father. We have at least one reader who descends from this branch of the Wallingford, CT, Rices.
If someone from this Manchester family were to have a DNA test, proof that these Rices descend from Robert-1 Rice/Royce could be obtained.

There is more about these Rices in Rice Book 2: The Immigrants, including a story about Frank James Rice, who was elected mayor of New Haven, CT, in 1909.  Frank's grandfather, Lemuel Rice, and Arba/Arbe Rice were brothers, both being descendants of an Amos Rice.

 The Bailey & Rice Families

(Your editor has, over the past year, received several requests for information on men named Bailey Rice.  As a result, I am systematically going through most of my records--and that includes several thousand unindexed pages--looking for information on men named Bailey Rice, as well as Bailey-Rice family marriages. This is the first installment of these Bailey Rice notations.)

PART 1

BAILEY RICE  "Baily" Rice is listed as a son of Rev. War soldier William Rice of Fauquier Co., VA, in an affidavit filed by Thomas Turpin of Bedford Co., VA, in support of the application of William's widow, the former Jemima Bristol, for William's pension. This is pension application WE-5695, made in 1840 when Jemima gave her age as 81 and said that William died Aug. 30, 1830.  Jemima says they were wed Dec. 2, 1788 at her father's home in Prince William Co. and lived in Fauquier Co. about 20 years before moving to Bedford Co., VA.  There are also 1840 affidavits by John and Baily/Baley Rice. John said his parents moved from Fauquier Co. to Bedford Co. about 1806. Another one of these 1840 affidavits is by James McClanahan of Fauquier Co.  In it he says that William Rice had a brother named Bailey Rice and a son named Thomas Rice, who married Sally McDaniel at his house "25 or 30 years ago"  and took her to Bedford Co., VA.  (SOURCE: Rice Book 1: Celebrating Our Diversity, p. 68)

BAILEY RICE  is named in an agreement pertaining to the James Rice will dated 28 Apr 1810. It states that James Rice of Logan County departed this life on or about 8 Dec 1809, leaving "paper writing purporting to be his last will & Testament," but which his heirs believe was not his intention.   They draw up this agreement giving much to his widow Alice Rice (the land, furniture, a slave, livestock, etc.) for her use during her lifetime.   The agreement specifically lists Anna Miles, Jonathan Rice, James Rice, Frances Rice, Hiram Rice, Joshua Morris Rice, Sabra Bailey and Martha Rice as his children.   Milly Rice, daughter of James Rice, Jr., shall have cow and calf.   Jonathan, James, and Hiram are to be trustees.   Various agreements are put forth.   Jacob Miles and Gabriel Bailey also signed agreement."  (SOURCE: Logan County, Kentucky Deed Abstracts: 1792 - 1813" as abstracted by Joyce Martin Murray.   Deed books cited in the abstract include A1, A, B, and C.) (See next item below)

Bailey-Rice Family Marriages

A FAMILY TANGLE OF RICE-BAILEY MARRIAGES (also see above item).
The Logan Co., KY, Bailey and Rice families are intertwined in a most intricate way. It started with four Bailey brothers--Daniel, Gabriel, George & John. Two aunts, Sabra Rice and her sister, Martha (Patsy?), took their choice of the four Bailey brothers. Martha chose George and Sabra wed Gabriel. Then their nieces, Nancy and Elizabeth Rice, married John and Daniel Bailey.  That made them all sisters-in-law.  Some of those marriages are given in this list. More details appear in the Rice Ezine (Vol. 1, No.3, Feb. 15, 2008 & Vol. 1, No. 10, May 23, 2008)
