The Obion County
Tennessee Rices

Alice Ramer (Rice) Bratcher and her parents obtained a copy of its records before the family Bible was burned in a house fire.  Here is a certified copy of those records:

To Whom It May Concern:

I, Helen Garrigan, Woodland Mills, Tennessee, have seen the Bible owned by Mrs. Martha P. Roper, Route 2, Union City, Tennessee, published in New York by the American Bible Society and dated 1865.

The texture and color of the paper indicates that this Bible is very old. The ink is faded and discolored and the family records are written in the type of script I have observed in very old documents.

The following names, birth dates and marriages are contained in the family records of this Bible:

 W. H. Rice and Frances Threlkeld were married
     Sept. 13, 1849.
 W. H. Rice was born March 22nd, 1826.
Fannie Rice, his wife, was born May 12th, 1830.
John F. Rice, first son, born June 28th, 1850.
William J. Rice was born January 22nd, 1852.
Sallie Catherine Rice, born December 29th, 1853.
Nathan L. Rice was born April 14th, 1856.
Thomas M. Rice was born January 28th, 1859.
Eliah C. Rice was born December 1st, 1860.
Daniel A. Rice was born March 6th, 1864.
Alexander Rice was born March 11th, 1866.
Lucy E. Rice was born October 24th, 1868.
Charles. E. Rice was born December 12th., 1870.

I, Helen Garrigan, a Notary Public in and for Obion County, Tennessee, do hereby swear that the foregoing statements are true as concerning the condition of the aforementioned Bible and the records of births and dates contained therein.
My Comm. expires Jan. 6, 1970.

Alice reports that William Henry Rice and Frances Threlkeld were married in Owen Co., KY.  William was born in Alabama.

Alice wrote a 150-page book on the Threlkeld and Rice family for the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution back in the '70s.

A four-page summary of this Rice family appears in Rice Book 3.

Early Maine Census Records

The population of Maine grew dramatically between when the first census was taken in 1790 and the fourth census was taken in1820.  During this same time frame the number of Rices in Maine more than doubled.

Nearly every Rice listed in the 1790 census of Maine  can be readily located and assigned to a branch of the family.  They are, indeed, chronicled in Rice Book 2: The Immigrants.  Gideon and Lemuel were brothers who served in the Revolution.  William was a privateer who became wealthy. Many of them descended from Thomas Rice, the  immigrant, who wed his master's daughter.

By 1820, however, the number of unrelated Rices in Maine had multiplied and identification became more difficult. Rices were moving to Maine from New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

This Story is a Real Barn-burner

How strange indeed that Asaph Rice
So pestered was with rats and mice.
His children thought twould do no harm
To clear them out to burn the barn.

When from the church the parents came
The barn was gone--the rats the same.
Ne'er troubled more was Asaph Rice
In that old barn with rats and mice."

~ from a history of Berlin, Massachusetts

Orlando B. Potter: A Financier in the Family

Financiers are much in the news these days, many of them tumbling from top echelons on Wall Street and asking for our money to bail them out.

From a Rice ancestral perspective this gives us two ways to look at financier Orlando Brunson Potter, who was an Edmund Rice descendant.

We could wish that this financial genius were here to help get us out of this mess, or we could blame him for a banking system that has slipped down through the generations and now has siphoned off money people need to feed, clothe and house themselves.

If you and I looked around and figured out that those low interest mortgages handed out with variable interest rates wouldn't be bargains when the interest went up, surely the banks had to know this too.  It looks like they gambled and lost...gambled that thousands of homeowners would squeeze out higher mortgage payments.

So, who is Orlando B. Potter?

Some people say he conceived our present banking system in 1861 to provide a national currency by which the commerce and business of the northern states might be facilitated during the War Between the States.  This system provided, for the first time, currency which would be worth the same value in all parts of the country.

Potter submitted his plan to the Treasury Secretary, Chief Justice Chase and President Lincoln.

It was said of him that he was among the great financiers who used their talents for the national good and not for private ends alone.

Orlando Potter (1823-1893) was born in Charlemont, MA, and studied at Williams College, then at the Dane Law School in Cambridge, MA.  He was admitted to the bar in 1848 and first practiced law in Boston.

Potter's interest soon turned to manufacturing and in 1853 he moved to New York. He was elected to the 48th Congress (1883-1885), but declined to be a candidate for renomination.  He next served as a member of the Rapid Transit Commission of New York City.

Orlando was the son of Samuel Potter of Wallingford, CT and Sophia Rice of Charlemont, MA, who also had children Merritt, Polly, Samuel, Hillier, W. Noble, Mary, Celestia, Direxa and Craige.

His mother, Sophia, was born in 1792 to Samuel and Dorothy (Houghton) Rice of Charlemont, MA.
Samuel Rice was a son of Samuel-5 (Moses-4, John-3, Edward-2, Edmund-1).

Descendant Mark W. Potter was for several years a director of the Edmund Rice Association.

 SOUTHERN FAMILY TREES

       Elijah Rice Family:

       From North Carolina
                 to Smyth Co., VA

"From the 1850 census of Smyth Co., Virginia, I have found a record of my great-great-grandfather, Elijah G. Rice, and his family.  The record states he was born in North Carolina, but I have no additional information as to county, etc."  (Elijah was born about 1813.)

So wrote Mildred Rakisits of Orem, Utah in 1975.
She continued:

"My great-grandfather, William C. Rice, was also born in North Carolina, but later moved to Smyth Co., Virginia and settled in Seven Mile Ford, as this is where the children were born.  William was married to Patricia Emmaline Smith and she was born at Seven Mile Ford. She later married John Buchanan.  William was born in 1839 and Patricia in 1836."

Mildred's grandfather, Henry James Rice, was born in Seven Mile Ford in 1861. He married Jessie Lu Dale and they and their seven children moved from there to Cass Co., Nebraska.

Here are the children in three generations of Mildred's Rice line:

Elijah Rice and his wife, Maria, had:
1. William C. Rice (see below)
2. David S. Rice, born 1847, NC
3. Sarah I. Rice, born 1849, VA
William C. Rice (ca. 1839-1864) died while serving in the Civil War.  He and his wife, the former Patricia E. Smith, had:
1. John W. Rice, born 1860, VA; married Hattie Booth
2. James Henry Rice (see below)
3. William Thomas Rice, born 1863, VA; died 1949
James Henry Rice (1861-1910) of Smyth Co., VA, and Cass Co., NE, and Jessie L. Dale (1868-1948) were parents of:
1. Blanche O., b. 1888; m. Gus Lowther
2. Grace L., b. 1889; m. James Tilson
3. William H., b. 1892; m. Margie E. Dill in 1914*
4. John T., b. 1894; m. Estella Hennings
5. Myrtle C., b. 1896; m. George Heutig
6. Basil K., b. 1899
7. Marvin LL., b. 1901; m. Mabel Grier

EDITOR'S NOTE:  Elijah probably belongs to the Rice family of Rockingham Co., NC, which includes members who moved to Smyth Co., VA.

CAUTION: Thousands of pioneer families trekked through Smyth County on their way to Kentucky, Tennessee and points further west.  Other unrelated Rices were briefly in Smyth Co., including some who settled in Tennessee.

Rice Slave Owners in 1850

There were nearly 350 Rice slave owners in 1850, according to a special census.
The 1850 U.S. census included Slave Schedules, which enumerated slaves separate from the Population Schedules. Unfortunately, most of the Slave Schedules do not provide personal names. In most cases, individuals were not named but were simply numbered and can be distinguished only by age, sex, and color; the names of owners are recorded. However, some enumerators listed the given names of slaves, particularly those over one hundred years of age. Other questions asked include whether a fugitive from the state (meaning if the slave had fled and not returned); number manumitted (or freed); and whether deaf and dumb, blind, insane, or an idiot.

A HELPFUL RESOURCE

The slave schedules are an under-utilized research source.  It's fairly apparent that they can tell you how wealthy your Rice ancestor may be.  Slaves were an expensive commodity and owning a lot of them can indicate not only how rich an ancestor is, but also how much land he owned.

The real benefit of the slave schedules, however, has nothing to do with the slaves.  Many people have to follow the ancestral trail back east from the west coast or the midwestern states.  A regular census listing may indicate that an ancestor who lived in Missouri was born in, say, Tennessee or North Carolina.  The census doesn't say WHERE in North Carolina.   The slaves schedules, however, list district or division where there are no towns.  They also give ward numbers for cities.  Many names appear with middle initials.

"She is now in Heaven with her Lord
after being in Hell with her husband on earth."

This inscription on a Winchester, Virginia, tombstone is thought to have been conceived  by sons who realized the abuse their mother received from their father.  If so, it is remarkable and wonderful that they recognized it for what it was.

________

Some anonymous writer with a great sense of humor penned this:

There were four kinds of people in the United Kingdom:

First, there were the Scots who kept the Sabbath -- and everything else they could lay their hands on.

Then there were the Welsh-- who prayed on their knees and their neighbours.

Third were the Irish, who never knew what they wanted -- but were willing to fight for it anyway.

Last,  there were the English, who considered themselves self-made men-- thus relieving the Almighty of a terrible responsibility.

DR. J. E. RICE

Dr. J. E. Rice, father of Mrs. T. M. Jones, died at the residence of Mr. Jones last Saturday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock.

Dr. Rice (Jacob)  was born in Crawford county, Indiana. He was in the 75th year of his age when death came. By profession he was a practicing physician, although he had not been in active practice for some years. He was a man of excellent attainments and admirable qualities.

He was the father of a family of six children, who live to mourn him. The funeral was held from the residence of Mr. Jones at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon and was attended by a large concourse of friends and acquaintances of the family.

Mrs. Ailsey Rice - Death of Aged Lady

The death of Mrs. Ailsey N. Rice occurred suddenly at the home of her daughter, Mrs. T. J. Blue, at Twin Lakes yesterday morning at 11:30. Mrs. Rice was a former resident of Leadville, and was well known in this city. The remains were brought to the home of her daughter, Mrs. T. M. Jones, on East Ninth Street, yesterday evening, and will be sent to Grand Junction for burial today.

Mrs. Rice's maiden name was Miss Ailsey Heflin. She was born in Kentucky September 25, 1819. Later she removed with her family to Indiana, locating in the little town of Rushville. She went from Rushville to Illinois, where she married Jacob E. Rice. They came to Leadville in 1879, and have lived here at intervals since.  At times they made their home in Grand Junction, Boulder and Denver.

Mr. Rice died eighteen years ago, since which time the aged lady has been making her home with her children. She spent the greater part of the winter with Mrs. Jones in this city, and left for Twin Lakes last Saturday. She had not been well for several weeks, but her condition was not thought to be serious. She seemed bright and cheerful when she left here Saturday, and arose yesterday at her usual hour.  Death came suddenly and quietly while she was sitting contentedly at a table. Heart failure and the infirmities of old age were the causes.

Besides Mrs. Blue at Twin Lakes and Mrs. Jones in Leadville, she had the following children: Mrs. E. B. Harlan, Mrs. Amelia Royson in Illinois and George A. Rice in New York City.

Mrs. T. M. Jones - Dies on Coast; Ends Long Illness
(The former Mary E. Rice)

Grand Junction lost another beloved pioneer lady this morning at 8:45 o'clock when Mrs. T. M. Jones of this city passed away in Stockton, Cal., at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L. J. Kitt. The immediate cause of death was heart trouble with complications.

T. M. Jones of this city left only ten days ago for his wife's bedside, to be with her during her illness; but he fully expected her to recover and live with him on the coast.

The news of the death was received this morning by Harry B. Jones of 1027 White Avenue, secretary of Grand Junction Fruit Growers Association and son of the deceased. It was a great shock in spite of the fact that he knew his mother was very ill...

The deceased was a rare character and one of the women of which the whole valley was proud to boast. She lived here for 25 years, coming west with Mr. Jones from Illinois inKnox Co. Rice 2 1888, and made her home here with the other hardy people who braved the discomforts of the then barren region that their families might prosper in a new land. She helped Grand Junction to prosper, bringing with her three stalwart and highly prized sons and one daughter. She was associated with many public enterprises, and was ever sacrificing for her loved ones for whose comfort and welfare she bore many trials. Her sons - Archie
H. Jones, manager of a big mill at Tonopah, Nev.;  Harry B. Jones of this city, and Theo Jones of Tonopah, Nev.; a skilled electrician in the mines there - stand as a tribute to the splendid mother, and Mrs. Bessie Kitt, the only daughter is well known and popular here.

The deceased pioneer was born in Knox county, Ill., in 1847, and was married in 1871, many years before coming west, and was enjoying her 42nd year of married life when she heard the summons that no mortal can ignore or deny.  Much might be written in commenting on the life history of Mrs. Jones.

Three months ago Mrs. Jones became too ill to long remain at this altitude and was taken to California where the hoped for benefit did not accrue and her vitality made no gain.

The funeral will be held in this city in all probability, as the remains of Mrs. Jones' parents both lie in the Orchard Mesa Cemetery and the wish of the deceased was to rest there.
