United Way Kicks-off the 2009 LIVE UNITED Campaign
| On August 18, 2009, over 250 people gathered at The Bridge in Anniston to mark the kick-off of United Way of East Central Alabama's annual fundraising campaign. Keynote speaker and Anniston attorney, Cleophus Thomas, Jr. encouraged the crowd to "be in that number" that gives back to the community, borrowing lines from the old song "When the Saints Go Marching In." Mr. Thomas explained that we should all want to be counted in the number that makes it a habit to give back and improve our communities. United Way's Campaign Chair, Joe Whitmore, explained that there would not be a monetary goal set for this year's campaign. "Our success should be measured in the needs that are met and the lives that are improved, not necessarily the dollar amount raised," Whitmore said. "Just because we meet a set campaign goal doesn't mean that there aren't needs that need to be met beyond that goal. Let's not limit ourselves with a dollar amount so we know that we are raising as much as possible for our community," continued Whitmore. Many area companies have already begun work on their employee rallies and United Way Staff and Account Coordinators are offering their support to ensure they are successful. If you need assistance with an employee campaign, or if you would simply like to give to United Way, please call (256) 236-8229 or visit www.uweca.org. Old Navy Store at Oxford Exchange Hosts Teacher Appreciation Sale & School Supply Drive
Old Navy will be hosting a weekend-long event to show appreciation for our local teachers, as well as collect school supplies for those in need. The bottom-line is EVERYONE can benefit! The sale will be held this Friday, Saturday & Sunday, August 21 - 23, 2009 and there are TWO ways to save. If you are a teacher, you will automatically receive a 10% discount on your purchase all weekend just by showing your teacher's indentification. If you are not a teacher, you can still take advantage of the sale. Bring in two new "school supply" items to Old Navy any time this weekend, and receive 10% off your purchase. It's a great way to save AND give back to the community at the same time. |
United Way of East Central Alabama Completes 2009 Membership Requirements
United Way of East Central Alabama has successfully completed all of the United Way of America membership requirements by their respective due dates. The requirements include Membership Requirements Certification, Membership Investment, the Database 2 Survey of Total Resources Generated (a survey that captures the full extent of a community's resource development efforts during the year) and a report of this United Way's annual income and expenses. Over and above the annual requirements, United Way of East Central Alabama completed a mandatory organizational self-assessment as part of this process. The membership requirements must be certified annually in order to remain a member of the United Way system. It is important for United Ways to maintain high standards of accountability, and this is part of the process to confirm that the operations are transparent and meet or exceed United Way membership requirements.
