United Way raises $1,308,804 despite tough economic times
- Staff & volunteers celebrate a community who knows how to LIVE UNITED -
Corporate and community leaders gathered on Wednesday, January 28, 2009 to celebrate a caring and giving community at its Annual Meeting & Campaign Celebration. United Way volunteers revealed that the 2008/2009 Campaign had raised a total of $1,308,804. All contributions stay local and are invested in the community to help advance the common good for everyone. United Way continues to partner with health and human service agencies throughout the area and plays a vital role in funding many of these organizations. Sean Johnson, Area President for Regions Bank and United Way's 2008 Campaign Chair stated, "We are overwhelmed with the generosity of this community. Times are tough for everyone and it would be easy for our residents to choose not to give when deciding how to spend their money. But, there are a lot of caring people here and they understand that it is important to give now more than ever."
In addition to funding United Way's community partners, the dollars raised are also invested in United Way's three community initiatives: Dolly Parton's Imagination Library; United Way Success By 6; and the 2-1-1 Call Center. Anne Smith, a former Water Works employee who retired in 2008 after 21 years of service, was also recognized for her years of diligently organizing the United Way campaign for the Water Works employees. "I would call her our resident 'Water Works Angel'," stated Water Works employee Rodney Owens. "The continued success and increase in employee giving are directly related to her organization and efforts." 2-1-1 Awareness Day
|
|
United Way of America and AIRS has designated February 11, 2009 (2/11) as "Capitol Hill Day." This is both a state and nationwide initiative and serves as an opportunity for administrators involved with the 2-1-1 system to meet with legislators in person to urge co-sponsorship of PASS 2-1-1...an effort to obtain critical federal funds to states starting or enhancing a 2-1-1 system. (S.211 / H.R.211) Local United Way and 2-1-1 leaders will be in Montgomery on this day to meet with local representatives about 2-1-1. In conjunction, Family Services Center of Calhoun County and United Way of East Central Alabama have set aside February 11, 2009 to heighten local community awareness for this service.
2-1-1 is an easy-to-remember phone number that connects people in need - as well as individuals seeking to give help - with community services. The free 2-1-1 number has been set aside by the Federal Communications Commission for the public to easily access community information. Though only introduced in 1997, 2-1-1 dialing already reaches over 232 million people across the nation, which is more than 78 percent of the population. For more information, visit www.211connectsalabama.org or www.211.org. 2-1-1 is offered through a partnership with Family Services Center of Calhoun County and United Way of East Central Alabama. |
