| LIVE UNITED. It is a credo. A mission. A goal.
A constant reminder that when we as individuals think outside ourselves, we have the power to facilitate change. When we think of other's lives as linked to our own, our compassion grows. When we reach out a hand to one, we influence the condition of all. We build the strength of our neighborhoods. We bolster the health of our communities. And we change the lives of those who walk by us everyday.
More, it is a command. TO GIVE. TO ADVOCATE. TO VOLUNTEER. Because united, we stand. United, we elevate. United, we perservere. United, we move through. Above. And beyond. United, we can change what we see in our world.
The LIVE UNITED campaign is about the power of unity. We invite you to join us.

Help "Stamp Out Hunger" on Saturday, May 10, 2008
|
Hunger is not just a problem facing those in other parts of the world or even in other part of the United States. Hunger is something that faces many residents living right here in our community. On Saturday, May 10, 2008 you can help. The National Association of Letter Carriers has set this date for their annual "Stamp Out Hunger" Food Drive. Simply fill a bag with the non-perishable food items you wish to donate and place it by your mailbox. Your letter carrier will pick up your donated items to be delivered to a local food bank. It's that simple. United Way of East Central Alabama is a proud sponsor of the Food Drive, and is working closely with the National Association of Letter Carriers to distribute collected items to local organizations who help individuals and families in need of food. Letter Carriers will be collecting food in communities throughout the U.S. which makes the event the nation's largest single-day food drive. Visit the Stamp Out Hunger website

| United Way honors volunteers at Annual Luncheon |
|
United Way of East Central Alabama hosted its annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on Thursday, April 29, 2008 at The Bridge in Anniston. The event honored those in our community who give their time and talent to make our community a better place to live.
Tyrel Ramirez was named this year's "Student Volunteer of the Year." Mr. Ramirez was nominated by the Independent Reading Council, the non-profit agency where he volunteers his time as a Peer Tutor helping younger students. He is described as an excellent mentor who helps his mom, who is a single parent, with his brothers and sisters and even volunteers to cut the grass for an elderly neighbor.
The title of "Volunteer of the Year" went to Beverly George. Better known to those around her as "Ms. B," she has given 19 years of dedicated service to the American Red Cross. Ms. George provides an integral part of the mission of the Red Cross as she prepares blood donor collection sets. She celebrated her 89th birthday on April 19th, and she is described as friendly, caring, dependable, and dedicated.
