HOW DO YOU USE SOCIAL NETWORKING FOR YOUR BUSINESS ON THE WEB
The latest buzz for business is LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and other social networks. Should you hop on this bandwagon? Probably.
Depending on your business, industry, target market and sales region, one uses these tools differently. There are some common guidelines for using social networking professionally (like don't post embarrasing photos!). However to reach your target market requires a little deeper understanding of how these networks work.
Which network should you use? LinkedIn? Facebook? or both?
I gave a seminar on the topic last month to a group of small business owners. We discussed how to setup a social network for 10 different businesses and guess what? How to use which network was different! Like all marketing challenges, it all depends on your company's industry, target market and geographical sales region.
In addition to social networks, there are professional directories and local maps on the web. Seems like every day there are new ways to use all these marketing tools.
I've been on Facebook and LinkedIn for a couple of years. Here's what I do -
I use LinkedIn for business networking and communications. I use Facebook for personal communications only. I do not mix the two. Why?
My target market is on LinkedIn. My business networks are on LinkedIn. My professional associations are on LinkedIn. I love the way LinkedIN lets me share interesting articles with 1 to 50 of my business contacts, so easily and quickly. It takes just a few minutes a week to stay in touch. I don't need to maintain it on any time schedule (unlike a blog or newsletter). It's always there, 24/7, working for my business.
This will very likely be different for you and your business. Where does your target market hang out? Where are your business networks? Of the 10 businesses we covered in the seminar, 4 would benefit from a better LinkedIn presence, 4 should focus on their Facebook presence and 2 would benefit from both (target market on Facebook, business network on LinkedIn)
