SUMMER 2007
THREE STEPS TO A BETTER WEBSITE
by Suzanne Engels, www.webartntech.com

* NEED A WEBSITE? Start with the basics:

1. Look at your industry and competitors' website. Choose a few styles you like and those you don't. Write down the website addresses. Make a few notes about what you like and what you don't like.

2. Got a logo? Be sure it can be converted in digital - jpg or gif. Can't afford it? Select a favorite font style, choose a color and a highlight color. This is easily done in Word.

3. Have you developed a "unique selling position"? Write it down. Explain.
  • why you are good at what you do, better than everyone else
  • why people should buy from you and not your competition
A well-defined niche is the best search engine strategy for a small business budget.

* DOES YOUR WEBSITE NEED AN UPDATE? Here's three tips:

1. Review your products/services - are you still promoting your best-selling and most-profitable items on your website? Has your business focus changed? Make a quick list of products/services in TODAY'S priority order. Focus your website changes on the top priority product or service pages.

2. Check your visitor statistics and search engine rankings?
  • Where are visitors coming from?
  • What are they looking at on your site?
Match this with your priority products/services list. Change top priority pages. Don't waste your valuable time on low priority pages that few are visiting!

3. Check that home page - these days the search engines expect to see lots of interesting content on a home page, such as
  • Recent company news
  • New client announcements
  • New products or projects
  • Keywords and phrases specific to your market niche
