Can you believe that summer is already upon us? Not only that, but we're halfway through the year now! Where is the time going?

Well, they do say that time flies when you're having fun. I guess with so many fun things going on in California's Gateway to Yosemite, it's only natural that the year goes by with startling rapidity.

As always, read on for some fun events, great travel incentives and much more.

Wine tasting room brings in big talent

Appellation California
Friday night concerts are back at Appellation California, the popular wine tasting room in Madera.

The free concerts take place each Friday night on the ample lawn behind the old Spanish-style home turned wine-tasting room, featuring wines from throughout the central valley.

Musical acts include Trey Tosh, Deja Blues, Let's Go Bowling and numerous others.

New businesses open at Bass Lake
New shops and old favorites open up
for the summer season 


Pines Village
A pair of new stores opened at the Pines Village at Bass Lake, adding even more shopping to the area.

The Man Cave, a store specializing in gifts for the man of the house and Bass Lake Treasures, a new variety store,  join the Pines Village Market & Deli, Bass Lake Bakery and Pizzeria, Good 'Ol Daze, Bass Lake Boat Rentals and more.

Come on Wednesday for the weekly Bass Lake Farmer's Market, and make it a complete shopping experience.

Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad steams on at night

Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad
The popular Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad has begun offering their Moonlight Specials.

The tours consist of a BBQ dinner cooked by the staff at YMSPRR starting at 6:30. The train then leaves at 7:30 with an evening run and campfire songs at the picnic area.

The Moonlight Special happens each Wednesday and Saturday through August 29 and each Saturday through the first Saturday of October.

Other special events include the Moonlight Melodrama July 15 and Aug. 12, and a special Ride the Rails for the Children's Museum, with proceeds from rides, gold panning and more going to help the Children's Museum of the Sierra on Sunday, June 24.   
 
Berenda Reservoir Opens
Popular Chowchilla recreation area
opens June 1 

Berenda Reservoir
Summer begins June 1 in Chowchilla as the Berenda Reservoir opens for the season.

The manmade lake opens at 9 am Thursdays through Sundays for boating, jetskiing, fishing and swimming.

The Chowchilla Lions Club will host a fireworks show at Berenda Reservoir on July 1. Visit their Facebook page to keep up with the latest info.

Children's Museum announces summer programsChildren's Museum of Southern Yosemite
A series of events at the Children's Museum of the Sierra will help keep kids busy throughout the summer. Programs include Movie Mondays, Waterworld Tuesdays and Build It Wednesday while Thursdays will host Art Explorers. Fridays will be The Science Behind. Fridays at Fresno Flats will offer a dinner and program at 5:30 on Friday, June 8th. Bob Coates will present "How Does Your Garden Grow?". Admission is $10.00.The program  will answer the questions "what plants grow best in our area? What  plants are drought-resistant and will thrive during what may be a dry summer?"  The evening begins at 5:30 with dinner and program to follow. King Vintage Museum offers free admission to active military  The museum is offering free admission to active-duty military and their families between Memorial Day and Labor Day 2011 as part of the Blue Star Museum program. The free admission program is available to active duty family meKing Vintage Museummbers (with valid military ID holder and five immediate family members). Active duty military include Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and active-duty National Guard and active- duty Reserve members. While there, chip in to the Jake For Mayor campaign raising money for the museum.
