Mammoth unveiling in Chowchilla

Colombian Mammoth at Fossil Discovery Center in Chowchilla
The Fossil Discovery Center in Chowchilla recently welcomed their latest inhabitant: a full sized Colombian Mammoth.

The appropriately-named animal greets visitors when they first walk through the museum's doors, which opened in October of 2010. There have been many additions to the museum's exhibits in that short time, including the full-sized elephant relative.

The mammoth stands about 13 feet tall. The Colombian Mammoth, larger even than the well-known Woolly Mammoth, was one of the Pleistocene Era animals that roamed this region tens of thousands of years ago. Many of these animals are on display at the Fossil Discovery Center, all of which were found at a dig site adjacent to the museum.
