Keep vital documents together and in a waterproof, lockable container. They should be easily accessible in case you have to evacuate or need to make a claim at a later date. Important documents to include are:
- Checkbook, savings account passbooks and safe deposit keys
- Social security cards and records
- Birth, death, marriage certificates, divorce decrees
- Medical records including living wills and health care proxies
- Property and health insurance policies and cards
- Tax returns and any military records
- Wills and powers of attorney
- Car titles, leases and registrations
- Passports and green cards
- Mortgage documents and retirement account records
- Disc of backed up computer files
- Home inventory on paper, disc or video
