Fall River match attends
White House mentoring event

The Fall River mentor and mentee who were selected to be in the National Mentoring Month ReelPeople national PSA had the privilege of attending yesterday's mentoring event at the White House.

Becky Levasseur, 16, and her mentor, Deborah Everett, from Big Friends Little Friends/Family Service Association, sat in the front row and shook First Lady Michelle Obama's hand.

Representatives from MENTOR, along with numerous mentors and their mentees, were among those who attended the event, where President Obama celebrated National Mentoring Month.

Massachusetts FY 2011 budget
Gov. Patrick releases his proposed FY11 budget on Jan. 27, beginning the state budgeting process for this year.

Training opportunity: "Organizing to Prevent State Budget Cuts"
This Feb. 2 training will assist with:

  1. Understanding the state budget process, the politics involved, and how state legislators think about these decisions;
  2. How to organize effective local meetings with legislators; and
  3. Learning more about revenue and taxes so you can answer "how do we pay for what you're asking for when we have deficits in the billions?"

Massachusetts Dept. of Public Health (MDPH) Funding Opportunity
An RFR from MDPH has been released for applicants with the commitment and capacity to run age-appropriate, youth development programs in Massachusetts for young people, ages 10-24. Programs must utilize a youth development model that engages girls and boys in decision-making, developing their voice, enhancing life skills, and broadening their social supports with role models in the community and/or their peers.

Deadline to apply is Feb. 18.

Host an Ambassador of Mentoring
The RFP to host a Highland Street AmeriCorps Ambassador of Mentoring is still open - the deadline to apply is Jan. 29.

Position available: Training and Technical Assistance Specialist
MMP is looking to hire a Training and Technical Assistance Specialist. This is a part time position (16 hours per week) that can be based in either the Boston or Springfield office. Learn more

Scholarship money for your mentees
  • The Yawkey Scholars Program is a four-year, renewable college scholarship for low-income students who participated in a sustained mentoring relationship during high school. Apply now - the deadline is Feb. 15. 
  • The Bank of America Student Leaders program recognizes students - juniors and seniors in high school - with a passion for improving their community. Apply now - the deadline is Feb. 17.
  • The KELLY Award is a one-time educational gift, named in honor of Ted and Debbie Kelly, awarded to a mentee who has persevered through and overcome adversity. Apply now - the deadline is Feb. 24.
