 MMP staff share expertise at
local conference

The Massachusetts Service Alliance's 2009 Conference on Volunteering and Service, held June 4, was an inspiring day of learning, connection and dialogue between nonprofit, public and private sector leaders and service participants.

Staff from MMP and mentoring programs from across the state played an integral role in leading several workshops that were offered over the course of the day: Manager of Training, Linda Peterson, led a workshop called "Finding the Right Person for the Right Job: Screening Volunteers for Effectiveness and Safety."

Additionally, Sue Anne Endelman, Vice President of Training and Strategic Services, moderated a panel called "Galvanizing Volunteers to Effect Change in Communities: Lessons from the Mentoring Field."

For a list of mentoring programs that lead workshops, please check out the program highlights section of the e-bulletin.

Service in MA needs support
Funding towards service in Massachusetts may be cut from the state budget next year, jeopardizing federal and private-sector match support for service in Massachusetts.

Check out our Web site for more on the subject and to read several recent op-eds and articles about service in Massachusetts.

June Jamboree great start to summer!

The first June Jamboree was a great success thanks to a combination of perfect weather, the participation of 100 mentors, mentees and program staff, and the efforts of MMP's AmeriCorps Ambassadors of Mentoring, who put together the entire event.arts and crafts at June Jamboree

Held at Framingham State College on June 13, the day included relay races, an obstacle course, kickball, arts and crafts, a dance competition, board games and more. Several attendees won passes to the Museum of Science and Shauntina, age 9, from Sociedad Latina, won the grand prize of a pair of Red Sox tickets.

Recovery funding helps expand AmeriCorps program

A $124,000 grant through the Corporation for National and Community Service is enabling MMP to expand the 2009-2010 corps and reduce all of the host sites' cost of hosting Ambassadors.

AmeriCorps logoAs part of the 2009 Federal Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the CNCS issued an RFP to help expand AmeriCorps programs across the country.

In partnership with the Massachusetts Service Alliance, MMP will add four Ambassadors to the corps, with one serving at MMP and one each at Stand and Deliver and Family Service Inc., both in Lawrence, and SMILES in New Bedford. Lawrence and New Bedford have been identified by Mass Mentoring Counts 2008, the biennial survey of youth mentoring, as areas with unmet need for youth mentoring.

In 2009-2010, MMP will have a corps of 24 AmeriCorps members. We are still recruiting members! Please help pass along this great service opportunity and visit our Web page to learn more.

New Sector Fellow to develop knowledge-management strategy

Thanks to the support of the New Sector Alliance, Mark Pan, a 2009 Summer Fellow, will work with MMP  to create a knowledge-management strategy to maximize the value and utility of our body of research and information for  the youth mentoring field.  Mark will develop an in-depth understanding of our work and resources,  categorize our knowledge assets, develop a framework for knowledge-management, and leave MMP with an actionable implementation plan.

MMP's network of mentoring programs will benefit from this project, which will enable MMP staff to fully capitalize on the wealth of our staff's experiences in the field and the best practices developed by colleagues throughout the state and beyond.
